Psalm 119: 72 – 73

The law from your mouth is more precious to me  than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. Your hands made me and formed me;  give me understanding to learn your commands.

Prayer

Thank you lord for all the Seasons, this winter snowdrops lay dormant, then like you Lord they bloom in to life; we are living in sin, dead to you, but you laid down your life that we might live. We pray that you will bring life back to our buildings, that as a church we will be able once again to meet together to lift our voices, to sing praise to you holy name. Let the Covid 19 virus be eradicated as the vaccines begin to work.

We know in our hearts that as part of the world church, through the power of the Holy Spirit, that your message of hope and everlasting life will be known to all through people. Lord fill us with your love and peace, build us up how you want us to be. Amen.

Acts 3:1-10.

1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.4  Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

Acts 5: 12- 16.

12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. 15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by 16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

Let us read on The Apostles Persecuted Acts 5 from Verse 17

17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 20 “Go, stand in the temple courts,” he said, “and tell the people all about this new life. 21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin—the full assembly of the elders of Israel—and sent to the jail for the apostles.22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported, 23 “We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” 24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to. 25 Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” 26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them. 27 The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!  30 The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross. 31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins. 32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

HYMN 1151 Amazing grace unending love

Jesus can and does change lives, many seek him but do not know where to look

But God gives hope. Please watch this moving story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3ax9qH6UJQ

In verse Verse 3 says of Amazing grace are the following words

The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope secures

He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures.

We turn back to our Bibles and continue

Acts 5 from verse 34  But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honoured by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while. 35 Then he addressed the Sanhedrin: “Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. 36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. 37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. 38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. 42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Peter and John did not have any cash on them, no silver or gold, no change, but what they offered was something better. This man had to look up at them. He had been crippled from birth what hope had he had in his life he has to be carried to the gate by some one or may be even more than one person

He was a sinner an an outcast. Let us now look at these two close friends Peter and John who had worked as fishermen they had gone through the same trauma of losing their teacher and friend overcoming the shock of Christ's resurrection, they are more like brothers.

So when they healed this man, the chains of sin that he had been wrapped around him from birth fell of him he was free. Amazing grace his chains have gone.

Peter never takes credit for the gift of healing, he was a witness to the power of God and the spirit as in verses 29 -32  Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings!  The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead—whom you killed by hanging him on a cross.

31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Saviour that he might bring Israel to repentance and forgive their sins.  We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

Are We we ashamed to own our lord,? If the disciples had not preached and given people hope where would we be to day? Luke who wrote the Acts of the apostles met some of these people who had been touched by God through the disciples. While Luke was on his travels he, being a doctor, was highly interested in healing and the power of God at work. The way God worked through Peter and the others. Even if they were cast out like sinners they were forgiven and healed.

People who are CAUGHT IN THE DARKNESS OF SIN, SHAME, LOSS, today can be

given the same gifts of healing and hope. Christians pray together to respond to the calling of the Spirit. It is this Holy Spirit who gives us the courage to respond. But why do we hesitate when the message is of good news love, hope, and eternal life? Is it because we find it hard, because life has been tough? The disciples were put in jail and been beaten for their faith. We must not be afraid of commitment. When prompted we must put our faith, our belief and trust in

Jesus, to reach out to others whether it is over the internet or face to face.

Just Trust and obey.

There is a saying when the going gets tough the tough get going, or as some say when the going gets tough, run ( meaning run away from it) , of course we cannot do it in our own strength, we may feel like running away but there is no running from God he knows where you are at all times He watches over you as a good parent watches over their child. But for Peter and John. They put their trust in Jesus Christ in his strength and in His name they acted.

So let us walk our land with fire of the Spirit in our hearts. To do all things in and through the power of Jesus,

There is a hymn written by the songwriter Graham Kendrick. We'll walk the land  With hearts on fire  And every step will be a prayer  Hope is rising  New day dawning  Sound of singing  Fills the air

Two thousand years  And still the flame  Is burning bright  Across the land
Hearts are waiting  Longing, aching  For awakening  Once again
We'll walk for truth  Speak out for love  In Jesus' name We shall be strong To lift the fallen To save the children To fill the nation  With your song.

We'll walk the land

The wedding at Cana.

Song:

A man there lived in Galilee - YouTube

Reading:

John’s gospel, Chapter 2, verses 1 to 11

I rather liked this hymn about the reading. The tune is familiar to most people. In this version, there are 5 verses of the music, so just stop it after the fourth verse.

Slane hymn tune - YouTube

Jesus attended a wedding one day
with his disciples who followed his way,
But then a problem became known to him,
Wine had extinguished; the party was grim.

Jesus’ dear mother came up to her son,
“help us for we need to serve everyone.”
But he dismissed her; it was not his hour.
She bid them listen for strong was his pow’r.

Jars filled with water stood there side by side.
Jesus said, “draw some out;” they did abide.
When the chief steward drew drink from the jar
they were amazed for now stocked was the bar.

Jesus, please help us, when scarcity knocks,
May not our doubts all become stumbling blocks,
Free us to trust your abundance of grace,
Help us believe and your truth to embrace.

For all her prominence in our tradition, we don’t really know much about Mary, and we have very few records of her actions. By the time of this event, Jesus was about 30, and she had had all this time to wonder about him, and what he was about. We don’t know what Jesus had done with most of the last 30 years, the only account we have was when he went to the temple, and then Mary lost him. She had no doubt decided that he was in some way different from his contemporaries, although perhaps she was not fully aware how different.

They had gone to a local wedding, we don’t know whose wedding it was, nor how many people were present. But there had been a miscalculation, the wine had run out. This would have reflected badly on the hosts, and perhaps affected their standing in the community. Mary was concerned for her hosts, and brought the problem to the attention of Jesus, perhaps he already knew, but he dismissed her, saying that it was not yet his time.

Mary was not to be discouraged, but apparently did not nag at Jesus, instead she told the servants to do whatever he told them. She obviously had faith that Jesus would be able to solve the problem.

Even in the face of his apparent lack of interest, she persisted in her efforts to involve Jesus in the solution. Events proved her faith to have been rewarded.

Without her faith, nothing would have happened.

Song:

Give me the faith which can remove - YouTube

Of course, nothing could have happened if others had not played their part. Surely the servants would have wondered what he was trying to do when he told them to fill the water containers provided for ritual ablutions. What does this have to with the party?” they would have been thinking. “Everyone is here, and there is now no need for ablutions.” But they did as Mary asked, and followed Jesus’ instructions.

Then, without apparently doing anything, Jesus told them to take some water to the chief steward.

The verdict? “Better than anything that we have already had!”

Whilst we don’t know how many people were at the wedding, the sudden appearance of about 150 gallons (675 litres, or 900 bottles) would not have gone unnoticed.

Without the obedience of the servants, nothing would have happened.

Behold the servant of the Lord

Behold the servant of the lord - YouTube

In Matthew’s gospel, chapter 9, Jesus refers to his message as “New wine”. Something that had not been around before. In this story of his first recorded miracle, the wine is described as better than the wine had been before, at the start of the wedding. Jesus’ message is proclaimed to be better than what had gone before.

In this story we see the importance of faith, and of obedience. It shows what can result from faith and obedience, even in unexpected situations, even when we do not understand what it is we are being asked to do.

We see the ability of Jesus to change the mundane into the extraordinary.

Prayer:

Thank you for helping us to make it through this difficult year. Thank you that you’ve carried us through the uncertainty of deep waters, through the flames of trials, and through the pain of hard losses. We are constantly aware of how much we need you, your grace, your strength, your power working through even the toughest days.

Help us to keep our focus first on you this season. Please forgive us for giving too much time and attention to other things, for looking to other people before coming to you first. Help us to reflect again, on you. Thank you that you came to give new life, peace, hope, and joy. Thank you that your power is made perfect in our weakness.

Help us to remember that the gift of Christ, Immanuel, is our greatest treasure. Fill us with your joy and the peace of your Spirit. Direct our hearts and minds towards you. Thank you for your reminder that both in seasons of celebration and in seasons of brokenness, you’re still with us. For you never leave us. Thank you for your daily powerful Presence in our lives, that we can be assured your heart is towards us, your eyes are over us, and your ears are open to our prayers. Thank you that you surround us with favor as with a shield, and we are safe in your care.

We choose to press in close to you today, and keep you first in our hearts and lives. Without you we would surely fail, but with you, there is great hope. Thank you for your healing power, thank you for bringing us into this new season up ahead. We look forward to all that You still have in store.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

The Hands of Jesus

If you would like to take Holy Communion

you will need a small piece of bread or biscuit,

and a small drink of juice or water to use later in this service.

Creating Hands

Bible Readings:

Genesis 1: 1 – 5.  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3 And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light ‘day’, and the darkness he called ‘night’. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.

Colossians 1:v15 The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation

In the gospel of Luke The disciples were shown the power that Jesus had and it

unnerved them.

22One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they set out, 23and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24And they went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25He said to them, “Where is your faith?” And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?”

Carpenter hands.

Mark 6: 1 – 6

Jesus went on from there and came to His home town, accompanied by His disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard Him were astonished. “Where did this man get these ideas?” they asked. “What is this wisdom He has been given? And how can He perform such miracles? 3 Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses ,Judas, and Simon? Aren’t His sisters here with us as well?” And they took offence at Him.

4Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his home town, among his relatives, and in his own household is a prophet without honour.” 5 So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them. 6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around from village to village, teaching the people.

Some children are given wooden toys as gifts that are hand carved.

You may have wooden spoons or rolling pins. My great aunt had an African hard wood fruit bowl that was made for her by a villager when she spent a few months as a missionary with the tribe. She always spoke of them with much warmth, the women would go out to the river holding hands and singing she felt part of them when one of the women took her by the hand and led her to where they did their washing. I have always been fascinated by wood turners and their skills.

Jesus learned his carpentry skills from his dad Joseph. It is not recorded what he made or mended. But he was known as the carpenter from Nazareth.

Taken from Our Daily Bread By Patricia Raybon|January 14th, 2021

The winter night was cold when someone threw a large stone through a Jewish child’s bedroom window. A star of David had been displayed in the window, along with a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. In the child’s town of Billings, Montana, thousands of people—many of them believers in Jesus—responded to the hateful act with compassion. Choosing to identify with the hurt and fear of their Jewish neighbours, they pasted pictures of menorahs in their own windows.

As believers in Jesus, we too receive great compassion. Our Saviour humbled Himself to live among us (John 1:14), identifying with us. On our behalf, He, “being in very nature God . . . made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:6–7). Then, feeling as we feel and weeping as we weep, He died on a cross, sacrificing His life to save ours.

Nothing we struggle with is beyond our Saviour's concern. If someone “throws rocks” at our lives, He comforts us. If life brings disappointments, He walks with us through despair. “Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar” (Psalm 138:6). In our troubles, He preserves us, stretching out His hand against both “the anger of [our] foes” (v. 7) and our own deepest fears. Thank You, God, for Your compassionate love.

Jesus’ hands are kind hands

Kevin and Miranda Jesus' Hands Were Kind Hands (#273 from The United Methodist Hymnal" - YouTube

Mark 10: .13 – 16 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.’ 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Jesus is not asking us to be childish, but child like, to have simple open faith seeing the world as a child with all its beauty and wonder .

Bible Reading: Luke 4: v. 40

At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. “

There is an evening hymn written by Rev Henry Twells.

At even, ere the sun was set, the sick, O Lord, around thee lay;
O in what divers pains they met! O with what joy they went away

 Once more 'tis eventide, and we oppressed with various ills draw near;
what if thy form we cannot see? we know and feel that thou art here

O Saviour Christ, our woes dispel; for some are sick, and some are sad,
and some have never loved thee well, and some have lost the love they had;

And some have found the world is vain, yet from the world they break not free;
and some have friends who give them pain, yet have not sought a friend in thee;

And none, O Lord, have perfect rest, for none are wholly free from sin;
and they who fain would serve thee best are conscious most of wrong within.

O Saviour Christ, thou too art man; thou hast been troubled, tempted, tried;
thy kind but searching glance can scan the very wounds that shame would hide.

Thy touch has still its ancient power; no word from thee can fruitless fall:
Hear, in this solemn evening hour, and in thy mercy heal us all.

This a lovely hymn is worth reading at bed time as it can lead to thoughts for your prayers

Prayers of Intercession.

Father God thank you for the healing hands of Christ. Me with all who are known to to me those who are ill in body mind and spirit may the love of Christ be with them and through the power of the Holy Spirit may may they know they are being prayed for.

Father God I bring to you all who are displaced, young people being told to leave their homes. Be with those who are living in refugee camps. Be with all who are homeless. Prompt me to give aid. Amen

Healing Hands.

Nurses and Doctors use touch to find out what hurts and then offer treatment.

God gives each one of us gifts that when prompted by the Holy Spirit we may use.

One gift god has chosen to give me is the gift of healing hands. It is not what I can do or say that heals, I am an instrument for Christ's’ use.

Some time ago in the Market a young butcher had an accident with a meat cleaver

and was rushed to Hospital a few days later he was back visiting and I got speaking to him he told me that it would be months before he would be able to work. I asked him “ Do you believe in God” he replied “yes” I asked him the next question do you believe in the gift of healing hands again he replied yes, he then held his hand out to me. In silence I prayed from my heart not speaking aloud holding my hand above the very large bandage my hand became very very hot. Then removed it over the next three weeks I carried on in the same way. When he went back to have the dressing removed the Doctors could not believe the amount of healing and movement he had in his thumb. After another three weeks He was back full time at work. All Praise to God it is fully healed. I told him to go to Church and give God thanks the young man did.

Holy Communion

Serving Hands

Bible Reading: Luke 22: 14 – 20   When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfilment in the kingdom of God.’

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, ‘Take this and divide it among you.18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.’19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ Take and Eat 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Take and Drink.

Bible Reading: John 13: 3 – 5 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped round him.

one of the servants tasks was to wash the feet of visitors,

Jesus was showing the disciples that to be master of all, they had to become the lowest of all a servant.

Our Serving Hands.

Have you ever thought how much you hands do, serving, caring, and helping others

As a teenager I worked in a hotel. Each day as a waitress I served meals, as a general assistant I served the guests through out the day.

My hands were always busy. In my twenties I was a senior care assistant in a retirement home, living in and caring for the elderly.

In my thirties I became a Nursing Assistant with the NHS community. In my mid forties I be came a cook serving meals in a theology unit. Being a mum of two boys brought my caring side even more. In my very early fifties I became a part time church pastor with my husband. But to put food on our tables we run an indoor market stall selling deli products serving customers all day long.

Jesus is known as the servant king his Hands working showing the invisible God at work in human form. Jesus came to save us from our selves. As human beings we all need the touch of hand on at some time. We are dependent on touch as soon as we are born if not during our birth by doctors, and midwives. A loved one.

A touch can be tangible.

Or a verbal touch like a voice over the phone. Or a touch that moves us to do something like an advert asking for us to help. It touches our conscience, our hands can reach out to charities. Our voices can share love a hand shake of friendship.

We use our hands in so many wonderful ways.

Our hands are his hands, what do we do with our hands? Look at your hands what do you see? Your nails where have they been? What have you touched in the last 24 hours? How many times have they been washed?

What does Christ want you to do with your hands?

The one thing that we do one, is that We must put our hand in the hand of Jesus.

And he will hold our hand. And lead us to where He wants us to go.

Put your hand into the hand of Jesus.

In the last sad hour, as I stand alone
Where the powers of death combine,
While the dark waves roll He will guide my soul
By the touch of His hand on mine.
