 Song: Come thou long expected Jesus

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus (Tune: Cross of Jesus - 4vv) [with lyrics for congregations] (youtube.com)

Prayer:

Loving God, as we look forward to the gift of Jesus this Advent, we think with gratitude of all that we have and all that you give us. We long to trust you with our whole selves, but in fear we so often hold back. Please give us faith to trust that when we give you what we have, there will be enough and more to spare for everyone.

Loving God, at this time of togetherness, we pray for those for whom this is a painful and lonely time of year. May we open ourselves to the action of your Spirit, helping us to be your hands, your feet and your eyes in a hurting world. Please give us courage to step out of our comfort zones in response to the stories and needs of others.

Loving God, we thank you for the riches that we have in one another. For the hard work of our ministers, our lay workers, and for all who participate in our shared life. May each person with whom we come into contact, feel that they are valued, known and loved.

Merciful God, in our greed and our fear that we do not have enough, we exploit our brothers and sisters across the world. Teach us to delight in your creation, not grasp its resources. We pray for those whose livelihoods have been destroyed as a result of climate change.  Stir up our hearts to turnaround to new and just ways of living, and to speak out for those whose voices are unheard.

Loving God, please guide our leaders at this time of uncertainty in the worldwide pandemic. Help all those who make decisions to think first of the most vulnerable. We pray for your peace and healing presence for those living with fear and anxiety.

Loving God, in this time of Advent waiting, help us to trust in your abundant love to sustain us daily. Please give us a deepening awareness of your presence, and we ask that the assurance of your love for us would shine through us to bless those we meet.

Amen

Reading: Matthew’s gospel, chapter 27; verses 32 to 56

Song: Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ You have come to us - Living Lord Hymn - Lyrics Video (youtube.com)

Matthew’s gospel is written by Matthew, one of Jesus’ disciples. It tells the story of Jesus’ life and ministry.

Prior to today’s reading we have had the account of Jesus observing the last supper with his disciples. This was followed by him going to the Mount of Olives tom pray, the disciples abandoning, and betraying of him.

Then there was a sham trial, by a group who had already decided that they wanted him crucifying, and the subsequent handing over to the Roman authorities, who alone had the power to execute. Pontius Pilate wanted to release him, but bowed to the pressure from the crowd. Then Jesus was abused by soldiers in the praetorium.

In verse 37, we read that above his head was the written charge against him: “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.” This is not just a notice, it is an allegation, an accusation,.

It is an absolutely mind-blowing thought that Mankind could put God on trial; The infinite God could be accused by finite people. Probably, this is the ultimate sin, an act of rebellion attempting to make ourselves King!

In John’s gospel, he wrote “He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.” The charge placed on the cross is humanity mocking God.

In Chapter 1, Matthew records the genealogy of Jesus, and traces a line of descent through David, the greatest King, to Abraham, the symbol of the Jewish nation. The accusation of the cross is written in our lives when we sin. We are rejecting God’s kingship in our act of rebellion. Romans chapter 6, verse 23 says that the wages of Sin is death; This is a terrible place to be, deserving condemnation from God.

The charge does not just mock God, it mocks the Jewish leaders as well. It is placed above his head, a place where it is visible to the maximum number of people. The notice being above his head is symbolic of Jesus taking the sins of other upon himself. This means that others can receive the righteousness which he had already.

Even the act of sitting down has a symbolism. The soldiers who had mocked and beaten him, then crucified him. The sitting down in a symbol of finishing work, of completion. They thought that Jesus was finished. But, this was no ordinary crucifixion; three hours of darkness, the temple curtain torn in two, the rocks split, the tombs opened and the dead raised all point to this not being normal at all!

The soldier who had done this dead exclaimed that surely this was the son of God. Not just the King of the Jews, but the Son of God!

Like the soldiers, we are included; no matter what we have don, no-one is too far removed to be forgiven, to receive Jesus as King.

Think about the charge; think about the response of the soldier who saw his sins washed away.

If you are unsure about your destiny, accept this offer. It is available to all, just as it was to the soldier.

We were all sinners.

We were all lost.

We have been saved.

Song: O worship the king

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAyKmYD2Zg8

Today is the last Sunday of the church year, next week the year begins with the first Sunday in Advent, four Sundays before Christmas. Today reminds us that it is Stir Up Sunday? a Sunday linked with Christmas puddings.

Stir the pudding‚ sisters‚ brothers; God has blessed us — think of others.
Fruit aplenty in the mixture gives it body‚ gives it texture.
Stir your people‚ God who made us; let inertia not degrade us!
Fruit aplenty in our living‚ make us caring and self-giving.

Words: Copyright‚ ©‚ 2002‚ Norman J Goreham

The great cry 'stir up' was a reminder to congregations to get the Christmas pudding made in plenty of time to mature before Christmas. In addition to the mixture was a silver threepenny bit or a silver sixpence whoever gets it on their plate on Christmas Day should get worldly riches heaped upon them. However, the Stir Up prayer is actually asking God for something much more important. For God to do the stirring;

Let us pray Stir up, we ask you O God the wills and hearts of your faithful people; that they, and us may bring you the fruit of good works,; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Bible Reading Colossians 1 : 3 – 14

.Song: O Thou who camest from above.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G409PiftzDk

Prayer

O Lord, you are our shepherd, And yet we want. We lie down when we could act,
We stir the pot of resentment when we could be stirring a pot of comfort
We wander tempting paths instead of following you.
We see the desire in earthly things, rather than in you.
We hate our enemies and refuse to break bread with them,
We see scarcity even when you offer us abundance.
We pray for forgiveness, for your goodness and mercy,
So that we might dwell in You, in your grace, forever. Amen.

Since the Victorian era in Britain, Stir-Up Sunday has been family tradition of gathering and preparing for Christmas. Specifically by making Christmas pudding, an essential part of the holiday.

Memory of one Family’s Tradition of Stir-Up Sunday,

Stir-Up Sunday begin when the family gathered in the kitchen.

It was a time of reading the old recipe pouring and mixing ingredients together, all of the family would take in turn to stir traditionally it was stirred from the East to the West in honour of the Wise Men who followed the star to bring gifts to baby Jesus. The small compass that came out of a Christmas cracker lived in the box with the plastic holly and Christmas cake decorations. The smell of the smell of spices and fruit fill the kitchen. Grandmother was left to finish off the pudding she placed a silver charm in the mix then would tie the mix in a rag and placed in a steaming bowl. Preparation of decorating the tree. Memories of the little treasures is the true spirit of Christmas, because Christmas isn’t a “Trend”; it’s an amazing season to share time and love with those who fill your heart.

Another family story The Decorating the tree together was a family affair, we would gather around the tree on the eve of Christmas to switch on the lights, it reminded us to share the love of Gods light and love. We would take a small gift of chocolates to our neighbours on Christmas morning after coming home from chapel.

Christmas should be a joy not a stressful project that leads to months if not years of debt. Over the months leading up to Christmas we are inundated with perfect images of decorated homes, wrapped gifts and tables styled with napkins adorned with just the right accessory.

We talk colour schemes for this year’s festive season, and purchase the gifts that will tell our children that they are loved to the moon and back again. We can become overwhelmed with the pressure to deliver the perfect Christmas for everyone.

The little decorations of candy canes tells me that the perfect Christmas is something different. The true spirit of Christmas that fills the home comes from the heart of God; He is always there and is always perfect. Remember Everything can be great joy and fun even if the roast potatoes are burnt and your chairs don’t match. Jesus is the reason for this season.

Song: O Christmas tree ( words below )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcMdVq_kMP8

O Christmas Tree!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging;
Not only green when summer's here,
But also when 'tis cold and drear.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy leaves are so unchanging!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me;
How often has the Christmas tree
Afforded me the greatest glee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Much pleasure thou can'st give me.

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Hangs canes of pretty candy;
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Hangs canes of pretty candy;
with tinsel green and silvery
glittering red bows tied with ivy
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Hangs canes of pretty candy;

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy small lights shine so brightly!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy small lights shine so brightly!
From base to summit, glad and bright,
There's only splendour for the sight.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
Thy small lights shine so brightly!

O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee!
Thou bidst us true and faithful be,
And trust in God unchangingly.
O Christmas Tree! O Christmas Tree!
How richly God has decked thee! !"

Prayer

Like the letter J, I pray that your Christmas will be filled with Jesus. His love will wrap you.  His peace will guide you. His joy will fill you and overflow. His strength will make your strong and gentle. His grace will make you forgiving and loving.

Like the shepherds staff, I pray that the Good Shepherd would draw you and those you  love to His heart, to experience the sweetest love of all.

Like the red, I pray that you will experience all the saving grace that He purchased for you on the cross. Peace. Joy. His presence. Eternal life.

Like the white, may you remember the cleansing power is greater than mankind’s inhumanity. His blood cleanses us from all sin.

Like the green may the beauty of creation bring stillness to your mind may His strength up lift you and bring you contentment

Like the stripes, by His stripes you are healed. I pray that you will walk in healing and health.

Song: Love came down at Christmas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUsYcm7g-zE

I will leave you with the wise words of Dr Seuss from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas:

It came without ribbons! It came without tags!

It came without packages, boxes or bags!

And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.

Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!

Maybe Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store.

Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!

If you can, buy a candy cane for your tree and one for someone and tell them the candy cane story.

May the peace and love of God be with you this day and always.

Song: Tell out my soul

Tell Out My Soul (Tune: Woodlands - 4vv) [with lyrics for congregations] - YouTube

Prayer:

Father, my heart is filled with gratitude for the abundant blessings you have bestowed upon me. I thank you for the changing seasons, the falling leaves, and the opportunity to gather with loved ones in celebration.

Lord, I ask for the grace to maintain a thankful heart not only during this month but every day of my life. May I cultivate an attitude of gratitude that extends beyond the holiday season, recognizing your daily provision and love.

Help me remember to be thankful for the simple joys of life, for the warmth of my home, for the nourishment on my table, and for the company of family and friends. In the busyness of my daily routine, may I never take these blessings for granted.

I am thankful for the challenges and trials that have shaped me, for they have allowed me to grow and develop resilience. May I see your hand in every situation, understanding that even difficulties serve a purpose in my life.

I am grateful for the gift of faith, for the hope that sustains me, and for your abiding presence. As I journey through November and beyond, may my heart overflow with thankfulness for your unwavering love and grace. Amen.

Song: Ye servants of God

Ye Servants Of God - YouTube

God’s people are named in 5 different ways; believers, brothers, disciples, Christians and saints.

We are told that all born again believers belong to the same church, and that we should be open hearted to others and have a heart wherever you go.

    It is worth looking at these 5 names separately, and what we can take them to mean. Firstly, believers;

“Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.” (Acts 5 v14 )

When someone is called a believer it describes their convictions. Everyone who believes will be saved by Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives in us and we belong to the Lord. You know other believers by how they speak with us and how they behave.

“Believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts; do not make the mistake of doubting your beliefs and believing your doubts.” Charles F. Deems.

    Secondly, Brothers

“Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them” (Acts 6 v3)

Brothers – or brethren – means their company, family, band. They had all things in common and as they became believers they shared with others who had less. In the bible they met regularly, went to houses to break bread and gather together. They enjoyed life and each other’s company.

The Lord wants us to harmonise and develop relationships with each other and with him. We can encourage and help each other, have fellowship and love each other.

    Thirdly, Disciples

“Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples.” (Acts 9 v1-2)

A disciple is called to follow Jesus in the face of persecution, to learn from and copy his master Jesus and to serve. Jesus came to serve and to die.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2 v5)

We need to be humble and show our concerns for others.

“Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9 v62)

If we love Jesus we will press on. It costs to follow Jesus, you will face difficult opposition. However it will cost more not to follow him.

    Fourthly, Christians;

Christians can be recognised in their conduct. If people criticise, don’t retaliate, just let it go. Always identify with the Lord and be proud to be a Christian. When opportunity comes, talk about Jesus and be known as a Christian by our behaviour and concern for others.

    Fifthly, Saints;

The term “saint” is used in the bible to refer to believers. More recent use is to refer to someone who has made a significant contribution, or sacrifice. The term is usually used after someone’s death.

There is nothing in the bible to suggest that after someone has died their Christian status can be changed or elevated. We are being made holy by the Lord whilst living, by work of the Holy Spirit.

“ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5 v22)

We need to aim to have the same character as Jesus, it is a process which is ongoing throughout our life.

Psalm 85.

    Using beautiful imagery, the psalmist tells us that there is a relationship between righteousness and peace-they kiss each other.

    It’s symbolic of a true connection. If we want to know lasting peace, we need to be concerned about our required standard. The two are inseparable.

    Righteousness means

    Goodness, virtue, uprightness, decency, integrity, worthiness, morality, honesty, honour,

    blamelessness, guiltlessness, sinlessness, saintliness, purity, noble-mindedness;

but sin brings us short of the standard. God knows this. So he sent His only son into the world. Jesus the prince of peace who died that we may be saved.

That through him righteousness and peace are one.

James 3:17-18

O God our help in ages past

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjdmLstpNGE

At 11.00am - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - the First World War came to an end. Much of the war had been fought in dug-out trenches across Belgium and France. It is thought that about 9 million soldiers lost their lives, and about 27 million were wounded - many of them permanently disabled. At 11.00am, the fighting stopped everywhere, six hours after the Armistice was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne, northern France. Two years later the body of an unknown British soldier from one of the battlefields was laid in a coffin and brought over to England. On this day in 1920 the coffin of the unknown soldier was taken in procession to Westminster Abbey, past thousands of people lining the streets. During the service, the coffin was laid to rest with some soil from France in the floor of the central aisle of Westminster Abbey. The tomb commemorates all British casualties, especially those who have no known grave, and all who suffered during that war and since. Lying there amongst the tombs of kings and queens and many famous people, this “Tomb of the Unknown Warrior” bears the inscription, “Beneath this stone rests the body of a British warrior, unknown by name or rank, brought from France to be among the most illustrious of the land.” During the First World War, the soldiers in their dug-outs could see red poppies growing in the fields of Flanders, the name for an area that covers parts of Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Each year, the Royal British Legion sells artificial red poppies to raise money for British injured soldiers, sailors and aircrew who have served their country up to the present day.

Last Sunday, acts of remembrance took place to recall those who had given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Please pause for two minutes, and hold in your prayers, those who have laid the lives down fighting for peace.

Poem by Henry William Baker 1821 – 77

O God of love, O King of peace, Make wars throughout the world to cease;
Our greed and violent ways restrain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again. Remember, Lord, your works of old,
The wonders that your people told;
Remember not our sins' deep stain. Give peace, O God, give peace again.

Whom shall we trust but you, O Lord? Where rest but on your faithful word?
None ever called on you in vain. Give peace, O God, give peace again. Where saints and angels dwell above All hearts are joined in holy love;
Oh, bind us in that heavenly chain. Give peace, O God, give peace again.

Prayer:

Beauty for brokenness, Hope for despair Lord, in the suffering, This is our prayer, Bread for the children, Justice, joy, peace Sunrise to sunset Your kingdom increase! God of the poor, Friend of the weak, Give us compassion we pray, Melt our cold hearts, Let tears fall like rain, Come, change our love From a spark to a flame. Shelter for fragile lives, Cures for their ills, Work for the craftsman, Trade for their skills, Land for the dispossessed, Rights for the weak,Voices to plead the cause Of those who can't speak. Refuge from cruel wars, Havens from fear, Cities for sanctuary, Freedoms to share. Peace to the killing-fields, Scorched earth to green, Christ for the bitterness, His cross for the pain. We bring before you the war torn countries, where men women and children have been hurt or killed, where families have had to flee from their homes. Christ as a child with his parents fled into Egypt a refuge. We pray for All refuges in the world,
Lord we know there is sorrow, bloodshed, hatred and mistrust. Father we ask for your healing, and love. Father we ask that your son Jesus our Lord, the prince of peace, will bring change in to the minds of those who lead their countries; that they may remember the love He showed on the cross. That love which can warm the coldest of hearts. That they may find a workable ceasefire which can lead to a foundation of respect and peace. We thank you for the love you have for us Lord God for your world the beauty you created open our eyes that we may see the harm we have caused, bring Rest for the ravaged earth, Oceans and streams, we have Plundered and poisoned, Our future, our dreams Lord, end our madness Carelessness, greed. Make us content with The things that we need God of the poor, Friend of the weak, Give us compassion we pray, Melt our cold hearts, Let tears fall like rain, Come, change our love From a spark to a flame

Lighten our darkness, Breathe on this flame Until your justice Burns brightly again.
Until the nations Learn of your ways, Seek your salvation And bring you their praise.

Father God, be with all peacemakers. World leaders and leaders of governments that they may work together for the good of all people. We ask this prayer in your name of Jesus. Amen

James 3: 1 – 18

We can build or destroy.

When you remember hurt things that have been said and keep thinking about them the wound is unable to heel it eats into you, you may end up carrying a chip on your shoulder and become bitter with your thoughts and words. Men and women who have been P. O. W. or hostages carry scars both mentally and physically. My Grandfather was a prisoner of war in 1916. But he never held a grudge he said “they were only obeying orders just as he was” he suffered with shell shock for the rest of his life but because he forgave them God took away his hurt and replaced it with compassion. He was a gentle person and loving man for all his life. He would show the love of God in his action to everyone he met.

There are Men and women who live to tell the story of conflicts, battles, and sieges.

And some still living through the pain of war. All countries who hold remembrance days hopefully will learn from history and to work for peace. We are are and should be ambassadors for peace. So let us keep guards on our tongues and speak of God’s love, Remembering not gossip but find goodness. Do not be tempted to listen to gossip but find the truth, speak with kindness. Do not curse the name of God with your tongue but praise him. Gossip is a sin. So Let our tongues speak of peace, And let our actions show love and compassion. This coming advent let the light of Christ shine bright in this dark world.

May your love of Him shine out always. Leviticus says in 19:18 “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the LORD.” Matthew records Jesus saying in 5:44 “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. John also writes the words of Christ in 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”.

Always remember the love Jesus has for you in your heart. He came that we may all have life eternal.

A short story by By:  Randy Kilgore

When a US Navy vessel arrives or departs from the military bases in Pearl Harbour, the crew of that ship lines up in dress uniform. They stand at attention at arm’s length on the outer edges of the deck, in salute to the soldiers, sailors, and civilians who died on December 7, 1941. It is a stirring sight, and participants often list it among the most memorable moments of their military career. Even for spectators on shore, the salute triggers an incredible emotional connection, but especially between the servants of today and the servants of yesterday. It grants nobility to the work of today’s sailor, while giving dignity to the sacrifice of those from the past. It was surely with an eye toward creating this same kind of emotional bond. Our participation in the Lord’s Table honours Christ’s sacrifice while also granting us a connection to Him unlike any other act of remembrance.

Just as the US Navy carefully prescribes the way it salutes the fallen, so too Scripture teaches us how to remember Jesus’ sacrifice in 1 Cor. 11: 23 – 25 it says . For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Prayer of confession .

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name and what our hearts can no longer bear. Set us free from a past that we cannot change, and open to us a future in which we can be changed. Grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, the Light and hope of the world.

Prayer of Remembrance.

Christ, have mercy on those who cry; Christ have mercy on us when we turn away from the cries of others. Give us the strength of compassion, that we may never shield our eyes and hearts from pain, but seek to heal and bless. Bless us with courage and arm us with hope, that we may lessen the suffering of our world.

Lord abide with those who find this day painful be close to them and as the day draws to a close may they know that you are ever with them and us. . Amen

Abide with me.

Help me keep you first in my life.

    Prayer : Lord God Help me speak only good things in your name. Help me worship you each week. Help me find away to honour my parents. Help me protect life. And to be faithful to those I love.  I know I am not very generous.  help me to want to share and care Help me speak the truth. Guide me through all aspects of my life Help me read your word of old but they are still written for today may they speak with in my heart and help me to understand that I may grow in my faith that your will may be done. Amen.

While the people were following Moses in the great exodus. God fed the people with manna (bread) they were led with a pillar of fire they saw God in action, they had to learn to trust in God this took 40 years. The people knew that Moses had spoken with the almighty living God. They were afraid as the almighty was so awesome. Moses told them that God had given him the Laws that they have to obey.

Exodus 20 1- 23

We shall look at the commandments one at a time

1. I am the Lord your God, You shall have no other gods before  me.

This one sounds easy or is it. Do we put worldly needs first? do we think “it does not matter if we do not worship Him to day because I am too busy with this or that.” God would like to be come the most important aspect of your life.

2. Do not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven or on earth or worship it

God is not an object made from wood, stone, precious, gems, or any thing else. God is the only living God for us to trust to worship and praise. Do not make Him jealous He loves you unconditionally and worthy of all praise and glory

Moses I know you’re the man

3."You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain..."

Some times it is say to “for God’s sake” this is what it means to take God’s name in vain

Another example a young lad was out on a camping trip he hit his head on a swinging camping lamp and let out a curse using God’s name. The camp leader said God has come in many ways but as far as is known He has never been a lamp. The boy was sorry and learned what blaspheme meant.

4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

Give God one day at the start of the week when we can dedicate our selves to Him and worship Him and be still in His presence

Be still and know that I am God

5.Honour your father and your mother.

let your actions work for good.

    6.Do not murder.

    Do not kill, Work for peace, Some people feel safe carrying a knife or Gun or any other weapon. Instead ask God to be with you. You may save someone's life this very hour or day

    Pray for those who kill, and pray for those affected by the death.
