 Song: Be still for presence of the Lord

Be still for the presence of the Lord (youtube.com)

Holy God

Psalm 99

The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. Great is the LORD in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name-- he is holy. The King is mighty, he loves justice-- you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy. Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the LORD and he answered them. He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud; they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them. O LORD our God, you answered them; you were to Israel a forgiving God, though you punished their misdeeds. Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the LORD our God is holy.

Definition of holy: in the dictionary holy is defined as either; 1 : exalted or worthy of complete devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness; or 2 : divine, for the Lord.

In the opening of the Lords prayer we use the phrase “hallowed be thy name” which means, made holy or consecrated.

Holy, Holy (Jimmy Owens - 2vv) [with lyrics for congregations] (youtube.com)

Reading Isaiah 6: 1 – 13

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each

with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;  the whole earth is full of his glory.’

4 At the sound of their voices the door posts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 ‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’ 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, ‘See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.’Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

9 He said, “Go and tell this people:“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
    be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’10 Make the heart of this people calloused;
    make their ears dull  and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes,  hear with their ears,  understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”And he answered:“Until the cities lie ruined  and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted   and the fields ruined and ravaged, 12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away  and the land is utterly forsaken. 13 And though a tenth remains in the land,  it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak  leave stumps when they are cut down,   so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.”

Song: Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty

Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty - from The Hymns Project (Lyric Video) (youtube.com)

Reading: Acts 4 : 1- 31

The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew to about five thousand. PTO

5 The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected,   which has become the cornerstone.’ 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”

18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, …………..

Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: ‘Why do the nations rage   and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth rise up   and the rulers band together against the Lord   and against his anointed one. 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” 31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

Song: Breath on me breath of God

Breathe on Me, Breath of God (youtube.com)

The Holy Spirit is referred to as the Lord and Giver of Life in the Nicene creed. It is The Creator Spirit, present before the creation of the universe and through it’s power everything was made in Jesus Christ, by God.

Readings: Genesis 1: 1- 2

 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Matthew 3: 16 -17

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Acts 2: 29 - 39

Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,“‘The Lord said to my Lord:   “Sit at my right hand35 until I make your enemies   a footstool for your feet.”’36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Revelations 4: 1- 9 After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, "Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this." At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits  of God. Also before the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the centre, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under his wings. Day and night they never stop saying: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come." Whenever the living creatures give

glory, honour & thanks to him who sits on the throne & who lives for ever and ever

The English word "holy" dates back to at least the 11th century with the Old English word hālig, an adjective derived from hāl meaning "whole" and used to mean "uninjured, sound, healthy, entire, complete". The Scottish hale ("health, happiness and wholeness") is the most complete modern form of this Old English root. Also used in the expression “Hale and hearty” to describe someone in the peak of health. The word holiday comes from the Old English word   hāligdæg (hālig + dæg "day") "holy" . The word originally referred only to special religious days. In modern use, it means any special day of rest or relaxation, as opposed to normal days away from work or school.

Holy Week In Churches recall the events leading up to Jesus’ death by crucifixion and, his Resurrection.

To be made Holy. It is are nature to be sinful, None of us are fit to be in the presence of God let alone to worship him But Our God is a Loving God who by his son has washed our sins away.

Reading:

Holy ground Exodus 3: 1 – 5

3 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.”4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”And Moses said, “Here I am.”

5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”

The Holy Land

is the birthplace of Jesus of Nazareth and the sites of his ministry;

Holy mountain.

Where is the holy mountain in the Bible? In the Bible, Mount Sinai  is the mountain at which the Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God. In the Book of Deuteronomy, (Moses face glowed in the radiance of God.) these events are described as having transpired at Mount Horeb. "Sinai" and "Horeb" are generally considered to refer to the same place by scholars. Psalm 99: 9 Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain,  for the Lord our God is holy.

On the mountain of transfiguration Jesus took Peter James & John in  Luke 9: verses 29–30. While he was praying the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.  Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus.

Holy of holies

the inner chamber of the sanctuary in the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, separated by a veil (a very heavy special curtain) from the outer chamber.

Yom Kippur was also unique as a time of closeness to God in the Yom Kippur Temple service. Yom Kippur was the only occasion on which the High Priest of Israel was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies, the innermost chamber of the Temple where God's presence was said to dwell. Most important day when the Jewish people confessed their sins and were reconciled with God.

Holy Eve Halloween In the twelfth centenary children would go round praying for the souls of the departed. as a thank you they were given soul cake the following morning the churches would pray for the Holy saints which has became as all saints day.

Holy Servant Jesus, Son of the most high God. Redeemer, Saviour. Our Lord, our brother, prophet. Priest. Teacher, and king, Prince of peace. Holy One

God’s love in action as a human man

So friends let us strive, thirst for holiness. Avoid the tendency to make judgements about others Set yourself apart, and Practice self-control. Love others in the same way as as God loves you. The Holy Spirit lives within you, it is Gods breath that fills you and me. for God is holy so then is His breath. Endeavour then to be holy.

In our closing hymn Jesus is king the words say Oh Holy One, Our Hearts Do Adore You, Thrilled With Your Goodness We Give You Our Praise
Angels In Light With Worship Surround Him, Jesus, Our Saviour, Forever The Same So we end where we started with Isaiah 6: v2  Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: with two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;   the whole earth is full of his glory.’
