Week beginning 19th May. Pentecost Sunday

Pentecost Sing

Book of Genesis chapter 1: verses 1 to 3

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might,  the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—
3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

Acts 2: 1 – 8

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues  as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

1 Corinthians 12: 4 – 11

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,  and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”

Prayer

Lord Jesus,  Prince of Peace, We come before you with hearts burdened and restless. Grant us the inner peace that surpasses all understanding. Calm the storms within us and fill us with the assurance of your presence. Help us to cast our anxieties upon you, and to trust in your perfect peace. In Jesus' name, Join us in unity of love as we say together the prayer you taught us.

Reading: John’s gospel, chapter 14: verses15 to 27.

Song: In heavenly love abiding

In Heavenly Love Abiding (youtube.com)

Starting with a question. Can you remember a time or situation when someone really rejected you? What did this do to the relationship between you, or to your feelings?

Sin is the rejection of God by people. None of us is righteous; none of us is without guilt.

Paul tells us that God’s judgement is coming, and that there is punishment for the self-righteous. This is regardless of a person’s religious background or practice.

He goes on to say that the power of God brings salvation to all who believe. In chapter 4, he has described how Abraham was justified (put right with God) by his faith. Jesus was delivered to death for our sin, and raised to life for our justification. By this, we have been declared not guilty.

Therefore, we can be sure of our peaceful relationship with God,

Peace; a lovely word. We use the word frequently, when asking for, or thanking for “Peace and quiet”, or when we ask that God will let someone “Rest in peace”. In the bible, words can sometimes have “bible meanings”. Peace can mean complete or whole. It can mean restore or make whole. Paul uses the word in this sense, that we have been justified, or made righteous before God. Nothing we have done has achieved this, it is grace, a free gift from god, it means that we are no longer God’s enemies.

We live in a world where things have to be earned, or worked for. This can be exam grades, a good physique, or promotion.

There is nothing wrong with working hard in life. Many things which are desirable can only be achieved with hard work. But Paul tells us that we can have a relationship with God, that we can cease being enemies of God, simply by accepting it.

Do we feel that we can accept it? Other religions teach that people need to earn their relationship with go; that they must do enough good, or be spiritual enough, in order to merit our relationship with God. We need to do nothing!

Can we accept the peace which Jesus gives? Or do we still feel that we need to earn it? Do we perhaps feel that there is some sin in our life which God hasn’t (or even can’t!) forgive? Sometimes we struggle to accept this.

We need to ask the Holy spirit to show us areas in which we might not be accepting him.

Closing prayer

Almighty God, we pray for peace in our world, where there is often conflict and strife. Bring an end to violence and injustice. Inspire leaders to work towards the well-being of all people. May your love and compassion prevail, uniting nations in a common pursuit of peace. Let your kingdom of peace reign on earth as it is in heaven. In the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, I pray. Amen.

and bring you peace this day and all days, Amen.

Colossians 3: 15 – 17

Living as those made alive in Christ

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Ephesians 5:18-20

Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4: 4-7

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Here are some questions that need thinking about there is no right answer but ask God to help you to thank him.

What threatens your sense of gratitude? Bring these to God in prayer

How can you give thanks as you bring your needs before Him?

Father in heaven, where we see problems How can we give Thanks?

In our private and or family life. How can we give Thanks In our Secular life

How can we give Thanks in Your Church in our Christian faith.

Strengthen the way we give thanks . Give our hearts a Spirit of gratitude

Secular spirituality: Practising gratitude is good for widening your perspective and balancing your mental well-being. Whether you believe in God or not. Vocalizing what you’re grateful for and what you want can provide clarity, peace, and fulfilment.

Thank you for everything in our lives, everything we have, the people around us, and those who have graced us with their absence.

We accept what has happened to us, but we continue to fight for a better world. We are grateful for all of it. Thank you. Help us uphold our morals in every situation. When we do wrong, we hurt ourselves the most. We owe it to ourselves to be the best version of ourselves that we can be, and we want to do good. Help us find a place in our community to serve others and keep us true to ourselves.

Through the Holy Spirit’s power we re-look at the following paragraph again. We accept what has happened to us We Thank you God that you are always with us. We continue to Pray for a better world. We are grateful for all of it. Thank you.”“Help us uphold our morals in every situation. When we do wrong, we hurt you the most. We owe it all to You Help be the best version of ourselves that You want us to be, help us to do good. Help us find a place in our community to serve You as we serve others, and keep us true to You, and in all things help us always to give Thanks to you O God

Thank you God for sending Jesus.

Thank you Holy Spirit for your comfort and peace; Blessed three in one be with us this day and always. Amen.

Psalms of Praise

Psalm 8  A psalm of David.

1 Lord, our Lord,   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants  you have established a stronghold against your enemies,  to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,  the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars,

which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,  human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels   and crowned them with glory and honour.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;  you put everything under their[g] feet:
7 all flocks and herds,  and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,  and the fish in the sea,  all that swim the paths of the seas.

9 Lord, our Lord,   how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Our first hymn is known as the old 100th. Here are two of the very first verses that were written

You faithful servants of the Lord, sing out his praise with one accord,
while serving him with all your might and keeping vigil through the night.

Unto his house lift up your hand and to the Lord your praises send.
May God who made the earth and sky bestow his blessings from on high.

Psalm100 .

1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2    Worship the Lord with gladness;   come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.  It is he who made us, and we are his   we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

All People That on Earth Do Dwell (youtube.com)

A psalm of praise. Of David. Psalm 145

1 I will exalt you, my God the King;   I will praise your name for ever and ever.
2 Every day I will praise you  and extol your name for ever and ever.

3 Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;   his greatness no one can fathom.
4 One generation commends your works to another;  they tell of your mighty acts.
5 They speak of the glorious splendour of your majesty—   and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

6 They tell of the power of your awesome works— 7 They celebrate your abundant goodness  and joyfully sing of your righteousness. 8 The Lord is gracious and compassionate,  slow to anger and rich in love.

9 The Lord is good to all;    he has compassion on all he has made. 10 All your works praise you, Lord;  your faithful people extol you. 11 They tell of the glory of your kingdom   and speak of your might, 12 so that all people may know of your mighty acts  and the glorious splendour of your kingdom.13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,   and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises  and faithful in all he does.

14 The Lord upholds all who fall  and lifts up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all look to you,   and you give them their food at the proper time.
16 You open your hand  and satisfy the desires of every living thing.

17 The Lord is righteous in all his ways  and faithful in all he does.
18 The Lord is near to all who call on him   to all who call on him in truth.
19 He fulfils the desires of those who fear him;   he hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,  but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.    Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.

Let us pray

we thank you for those who spread your word we gave you thanks for the ones that led us to you, we thank you for the authors who recorded  theses psalms.  Give us courage to proclaim your great deeds. and to spread your word. We give you thanks that we are able to praise your holy name in freedom. Lord we ask in the name of your son that you hear our cries for Mersey for we know we have let you down so many times Father forgive our wrong doings fill us with your love .

We thank you that we can come to you. Be with all ,our Christian brothers and sisters through out the world and unit us, fill our lips with praise, for ever may you be praised amen

Psalm 98 NIV

1 Sing to the Lord a new song,  for he has done marvellous things; his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him. 2 The Lord has made his salvation known   and revealed his righteousness to the nations. 3 He has remembered his love  and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen     the salvation of our God. 4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth  burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the Lord with the harp,   with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—   shout for joy before the Lord, the King. 7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,   the world, and all who live in it.
8 Let the rivers clap their hands,   let the mountains sing together for joy;
9 let them sing before the Lord,  for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness   and the peoples with equity.

Psalm 150    King James version

1 Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.

2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.

3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.

A man name John writes the following article which I have edited

One of the reasons why the Dam-busters raid has entered the British consciousness to such a degree is because it has been celebrated in music by the wonderfully evocative march composed by Eric Coates. It is impossible not to hear the Dam-busters March and feel the sinews stiffen to some degree. Music has the ability to make truth enter our hearts and grip our emotions. In the Bible the great victories of God, which save and deliver his people from their enemies, are celebrated in song. We are called to sing “a new song” to celebrate our salvation through the death and resurrection of Christ . Songs are ways of remembering and conveying the emotion of victory, to subsequent generations who were not there when it happened. This is why corporate singing is such a central aspect of the Christian life. We need great hymns and songs that declare the truth in ways that stirs our emotions. That is why it is so important that what we sing is Biblically faithful. Richard Bewes has done us a great service by setting Psalm 46 to the tune of the Dambusters march. It certainly helps to remember that “God is our strength and refuge”.

Our next psalm number 46 is taken from The Message Bible

1-3 God is a safe place to hide,   ready to help when we need him.
We stand fearless at the cliff-edge of doom,  courageous in sea storm and earthquake,
Before the rush and roar of oceans,  the tremors that shift mountains.   Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,  God-of-Angel-Armies protects us. 4-6 River fountains splash joy, cooling God’s city   this sacred haunt of the Most High. God lives here, the streets are safe,  God at your service from crack of dawn. Godless nations rant and rave, kings and kingdoms threaten, but Earth does anything he says. 7   Jacob-wrestling God fights for us,  God-of-Angel-Armies protects us.

8-10 Attention, all! See the marvels of God!  He plants flowers and trees all over the earth,
Bans war from pole to pole,   breaks all the weapons across his knee. “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.”

11   Jacob-wrestling God fights for us, God-of-Angel-Armies protects us.

It is therefore only right and just that we give God our praise.

Psalm 147 : 1 – 11 NIV

Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem;  he gathers the exiles of Israel.
3 He heals the broken-hearted  and binds up their wounds.
4 He determines the number of the stars   and calls them each by name.
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power;   his understanding has no limit.
6 The Lord sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.

7 Sing to the Lord with grateful praise;  make music to our God on the harp.

8 He covers the sky with clouds;  he supplies the earth with rain  and makes grass grow on the hills.
9 He provides food for the cattle  and for the young ravens when they call.

10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse,   nor his delight in the legs of the warrior;
11 the Lord delights in those who fear him,  who put their hope in his unfailing love.

psalm 18 :1 – 3

How I love you, Lord!  You are my defender. 2 The Lord is my protector;   he is my strong fortress.
My God is my protection,   and with him I am safe. He protects me like a shield;   he defends me and keeps me safe. 3 I call to the Lord,  and he saves me from my enemies. Praise the Lord!

Taken from “Our daily bread” By:  Bill Crowder dated 24th November 2023

Many consider Ferrante and Teicher to be the greatest piano duet team of all time. Their collaborative presentations were so precise that their style was described as four hands but only one mind. Hearing their music, one can begin to grasp the amount of effort required to perfect their craft. But there’s more. They loved what they did. In fact, even after they had retired in 1989, Ferrante and Teicher would occasionally show up at a local piano shop just to play an impromptu concert. They simply loved making music. David also loved making music—but he teamed up with God to give his song a higher purpose. His psalms affirm his struggle-filled life and his desire to live in deep dependence upon God. Yet, in the midst of his personal failures and imperfections, his praise expressed a kind of spiritual ‘perfect pitch’, acknowledging the greatness and goodness of God even in the darkest of times. The heart behind David’s praise is simply stated in ,Psalm 18:1which reads, “I love you, Lord, my strength.” David continued, “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise” (v. 3) and turned to Him. Regardless of our situation, may we likewise lift our hearts to praise and worship our God. He’s worthy of all praise!
