Week beginning 14th April

The words of the hymn Be thou my vision are from the book of Gael

The Saltair na Rann or "Psalter of the Verse there is only one copy of these verses in existence and is  the most important religious poem of ancient Ireland.

The thoughts, reflections, faith stories and meanderings of an Anglican Priest by Rev Shirley Murphy gives her insight to the hymn be thou my vision on the link below.

Vision is the process where your eyes and brain work together and use light reflecting off things around you to create the ability to see. It's one of the five main senses and a key contributor to how most people understand the world around them.

Vision – The ability to think about your future with imagination and wisdom. A clear vision brings your world into focus and order into chaos. You have the ability to see everything differently.

The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision. Helen Keller

Mark 10: 35 – 52

Prayer for Vision

Gracious God, source of light and truth, when Your Son, Jesus, encountered the blind man, Bartimaeus, he asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied, “Master, I want to see.” We too Lord, want to see. We want to see how we can better serve You. We want to see more clearly how we can honour You by honouring our sisters and brothers in your Church. Help us to see more clearly the paths You call us to follow. Give us, we pray, the spiritual gifts to faithfully answer Your call to , share the Good News and love as You loved. Open our eyes that we may we see more clearly and understand your will we ask this in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen Lords Prayer

There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.’ Proverbs 14:12 …….

The other day my son asked me to drive him to an area of a large city that I did not know well without a satnav. I was following the road signs, once the traffic eased I relaxed, but in doing so I missed a small sign that forked off on the left. Consequently I ended up going the long way round to where I needed to be. This may seem familiar to you. When we think we are going where God is guiding but we miss the turn, some times we need to stop read the map, ask a passer by for directions, if necessary turn around. In life, reading the Bible guides, pray ask God for directions, repent. Repent means stop what you are doing. Jesus lets you start afresh with him, he forgives and loves and guides. Ask Him to open the eyes of your heart and mind.

On the Road to Emmaus two disciples received vision/ Understanding.

Be thou my wisdom

Vision and understanding leads to wisdom

Proverbs 2: 6  For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge & understanding.

Proverbs 4: 7  The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Proverbs 11: 2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 16: 16  How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

James 3: 13

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

She has wisdom beyond her years

When I was six this was said of me. After talking with a very elderly lady who was upset after her pet had died. I am not sure what I said but she said this statement to my mum. I did not understand this statement at the time. Another way of looking at it is think before you speak. Hindsight is a good thing. The google search says “Hindsight is the ability to understand and realize something about an event after it has happened, although you did not understand or realize it at the time”.

Ask God for guidance in giving an answer Ask God to give you wisdom.

Be thou my vision is an Irish hymn. I thought it it would be good to have an an Irish proverb “May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far.”

King Solomon asked God for wisdom in a dream.

Be thou my battle-shield

Ephesians 6:10-18

St Paul gives us an insight to the word battle-shield

"Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.”

let us pray

Dear God, today we put on the full armour to guard our lives against attack. We put on the belt of truth to protect against lies and deception. We put on the breastplate of righteousness to protect our hearts from the temptations we battle. We put the gospel of peace on our feet, so we’re ready to take your light wherever you send us this day. We choose to walk in the peace and freedom of your Spirit and not be overcome with fear and anxious thoughts. We take up your shield of faith that will extinguish all the darts and threats hurled our way by the enemy. We believe in your power to protect us and choose to trust in you. We put on the helmet of salvation, which covers our minds and thoughts, reminding us we are children of the day, forgiven, set free, saved by the grace of Christ Jesus. We take up the sword of the Spirit, your very Word, the one offensive weapon given to us for battle, which has the power to demolish strongholds, alive, active, and sharper than any double-edged sword. We ask for your help in remembering to put on your full armour every day, for you give us all that we need to stand firm in this world. Forgive us God for the times we’ve been unprepared, too busy to care, or trying to fight and wrestle in our own strength. Thank you that we never fight alone, for you are constantly at work on our behalf, shielding, protecting, strengthening, exposing deeds of darkness, bringing to light what needs to be known.

Your world stands on the brink of war we pray and ask in your name that you strengthen all peace makers bring stability to all nations and peace in the hearts of all people. We ask this therefore in the blessed name of Jesus Amen.

Still be my vision

https://todaysword.org/teaching-series/vision/power-of-vision/

this is taken from the above todays word .

My Spiritual Father, Pastor Richard B. Peoples Sr., walked me around a plot of land a few years ago.  As we walked around an empty field, he began to explain to me what God had already empowered him to see.  He told me where the sanctuary was going to be and how it was going to look.  He went on into great detail about the doors, the entrance, the offices, etc.  He knew what God had allowed him to see, although we (the congregation) had yet to see it.  By the summer of 1997, at the time where I was scheduled to leave Augusta, GA; the building that he saw was erected for the rest of us to see.  He painted the picture of the vision God had given him and that vision gave us the motivation we needed to support the move of God in his life.  Last year (2003) I was afforded the opportunity to visit my Dad and walk around the land again.  This time the plot is much larger and several more buildings have already been built.  As we exited the the newly erected Family Life Center, he pointed to an open area on the land where the Lord has shown him the Faith Dome will be built.  I am now assigned by the US Army to Fort Gordon Georgia and by the Lord Almighty to Faith Outreach Christian Life Center, to serve God under His Lordship and under the Leadership of my Spiritual Father.  I arrived in Georgia knowing that I can support a man that has a God-given vision.  I have not seen this “Faith Dome” yet, but I have faith that I will.  God gives us Pastors according to His own heart (Jer 3:15) to feed us with knowledge and understanding.  These under-shepherd’s are the Visionaries of the local church.  We must follow them as they follow Christ.  In like manner, we must be the visionaries of our homes.  We can hear from God for our personal lives, just like Pastors hear from God for the collective ministry.  God gives us a clear Vision of His expected end (Jer 29:11) for our life and living.  This Vision then becomes the ruler by which we judge every decision; in order that we might reach God’s desired destiny for our lives.  That is the Power of Vision!  Sight is common in this world, but vision is rare.  Are you ready to be a Visionary for God?

Benediction

May the beauty of God be reflected in your eyes,
the love of God be reflected in your hands,
the wisdom of God be reflected in your words,
and the knowledge of God flow from your heart,
that all might see, and seeing,  believe.

Now

May the love of the Father, the tenderness of the Son, and the presence of the Spirit,

gladden your heart and bring peace to your soul, this day and all days, Amen.
