Song: To God be the Glory

To God Be The Glory ( Royal Albert Hall, London) - YouTube

Prayer:

Gracious God,

We are recipients of your great love and the good news of your gospel in our salvation. Enlighten the eyes of our heart that we may see, that we may know what is the hope to which you have called us: the hope of eternal life. May our hearts burn with the words of the Great Commission — so that we make disciples of all nations.

We pray that you open doors in all areas which our lives intersect. May you pave the way for the conversations we will have. We pray that you would open doors in our workplaces, schools, leisure activities, and our relationships. Make us aware of opportunities to bear witness to the greatness, the glory, and the goodness of our Saviour. Give us a boldness to walk through these doors and proclaim the hope of redemption in Christ and the promise of eternal life, for the glory of Your name and for our good.

As Colossians 4:2-4 tells us, may we “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving; and pray for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison, that I may make it clear, as I ought to speak.”

Amen.

We've a Story to Tell to the Nations - Harvest - YouTube

When did you last turn the television on and hear anyone say “We have good news!”? The media always seem to like the bad news, whether it about war, weather, or someone having a party that they weren’t supposed to have! Currently we are facing grave situations in the Ukraine, Afghanistan, not to mention the places in the world where there is still great trouble, but they seem to have slipped down the list of newsworthiness at the moment.

Generally, the press do not focus on good news.

In the aftermath of the pandemic which has affected most of us, there has been chaos in many countries; pressure on health care services, pressure on businesses, mental anguish for owners and operators on businesses, and many others.

People need hope.

Christmas seems a long time ago, and yet it is still important.

The shepherds were the first hearers of the Good News; that the Saviour was born, and they reacted with great joy. They went and told others.

This event is still good News for the world. It is relevant. It has impact.

Someone won the lottery, and was asked what it meant to him. “It was good news.” he responded, but now I’m surrounded by people wanting money, and constantly being invited to fundraising events. Perhaps it was at best a mixed blessing.

Paul asked, “How can they hear?” This requires, not just preaching, but sharing. Sharing of the news about the Saviour, about how he can change lives, about how he can have an impact.

In many circles, the bible is seen as old hat, old fashioned and irrelevant. People will admit to using it to press flowers, or even prop up the leg of an uneven piece of furniture! But the reality is that it is Living and Active. Name another book that is living and active.

Paul says that the message is “Sharper than a two edged sword.” Now, I have never experienced a two edged sword, and I don’t particularly want to, but I don’t doubt that it has impact.

Have you ever looked at you feet and said how beautiful they are? I certainly haven’t. But Paul quotes Isaiah and says that feet of the one that proclaims Good News are beautiful. We all need to know what it is to share the Good News.

If a surgeon were confronted with a patient, and knew the correct procedure to cure them, would you expect the4 surgeon to keep quiet? No, of course not. You would expect that the patient would be told about the necessary treatments, and prescriptions. The same is true for us. We are expected to proclaim the Good News.

God can work through tragedies and difficult situations. At the start of the pandemic, a magazine called “Hope” was produced. So far, over 400 000 have been distributed, along with many new testaments. A special edition of the new testament was produced for key-workers, which includes a section on where to find help in different situations that the reader may be in.

We never can anticipate the opportunities that God will present us with to share the Good News. The bible is a powerhouse with ability to transform.

But first, we need to ask what the bible is to us. Is the bible our steering wheel or our spare wheel? Someone once said that reading the bible regularly is like pouring water into a sieve; the sieve doesn’t hold the water, but it is kept clean!

We need to place this powerful word wherever we can, especially in the traffic ways of life.

God’s word has impact. We may never see the results of what we do, we can do things for years and not know how we have affected people. But, we sow the seed, and God provides the increase.

In the UK, there is an organisation called “Good News for Everyone” which seeks to provide scripture for people in various situations. If you want to know more about them, look at Good News For Everyone (formerly Gideons UK) (goodnewsuk.com)

Song: This is the day that the Lord has made.

This is the day, that the Lord has made | Lyric video - YouTube

Story: Hezekiah and Sennacherib.

There is no one bible reading which does justice to the story of Hezekiah and Sennacherib, but it can be found in:

First book of Kings; chapters 18 And 19

Book of Isaiah; chapters 36, 37 and 38

Second book of Chronicles; chapter 32, verses 1 to 21.

A more detailed version which uses historical records as well as the bible accounts, can be found here:

The Bible, Hezekiah, Sennacherib and History (covenantepc.org)

Lord Byron wrote a poem “The destruction of Sennacherib” which ends with the lines;

And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,
Hath melted like snow in the glance of the Lord!”

The full text of the poem can be found here:

The Destruction of Sennacherib - Wikipedia

The important point to draw from the story is that Hezekiah decided to trust in the Lord in his situation, and even when the situation seemed hopeless, he was delivered as a result of his faith.

Reading: Book of Nehemiah, chapter 8, verses 1 to 10

Song: Glorious things of Thee are spoken,

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken 200 Voice Mass Choir Classic Hymns Album "Sweet Hour of Prayer" - YouTube

Reading: Luke’s gospel, chapter 4, verses 14 to 21

In the reading from Nehemiah, we hear that when the works to build the new walls had been completed, the people celebrated. Their celebrations included the reading of the law. But most importantly, the reading was accompanied by interpretation, an explanation of what had been read, so the people understood.

The interpretation of what has been read is the task of the preacher, and it is a necessary task. But it does ask the question as to why the people wept?

For a long time, they had lived under oppression. This will always get people down, as certainly now as as it did then. The completion of the works meant that this strain had lifted, the oppression was over.

At the end of the American civil war, General Lee offered to surrender to General Grant. Among the officers of General Grant there was rejoicing, and one jumped on the table to offer “Three cheers”. He only got as far as one, when he, and many others broke down in tears. It was all over.

The people felt safe now that the walls were completed. If we were to preach in the street, we might not feel safe; there could be hostile passers by who would detract from our message and faith. In our own buildings we feel safe. This feeling of safety is often denied to our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world.

Compare this with our current situation. We have been oppressed by the recent Covid pandemic. Now, we are taking the first steps to some sort of normal. We are starting to rebuild; our lives, our way of life, our “walls”.

Have we come to worship today because we are grateful to God?

The people wept because of a conviction of sin. When the law was interpreted to them, they realised how far they had strayed; that it was this straying that had caused their problems in the first place. Because of their straying, they had become separated from God, and therefore, se3paratede from their land. They wept because of the realisation of how merciful God had been, and how little they had deserved it!

The preaching (interpretation) had received a response.

The Sabbath is a day for celebration, not a day to go round being miserable, and making other people miserable.

In Nehemiah, we read of the duty to share blessings with those for whom nothing had been prepared. Similarly, we have a duty to share our bounty with those who have nothing: to share what we know with those who know nothing of the Saviour, who are suspicious of the church.

A saying attributed to St Francis is “Preach the gospel to all, use words if you have to”. Rejoice, we are children of the gospel, children of the good news.

In our reading from Luke’s gospel, Jesus quoted Isaiah to say what the good news is. These groups he identifies are not far away. This is not something that is going to take a lot of searching to do. When he says to0 proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour, he is referring to the year of Jubilee. Every 50 years, debts were cancelled, bonded slaves were set free, and set up with supplies to live their new free lives. When he says that today in you hearing this has been done, he is saying that everyday we have the opportunity to do this, to set someone free.

Today is the day of Jubilee for everyone who hears the word of God interpreted so that they can understand it. The Holy Spirit will lead them to make a response. They can rejoice, and we rejoice with them.

A door has been opened. It makes Sense!

Praise my Soul the King of Heaven Lyrics - YouTube

Prayer

Lord, we hear about so many places with problems, it is difficult to know where to begin in our prayers. The volcanic eruption near to Tonga which has produced a tsunami has hit the news. Be with the people affected by the flooding. Help and guide those who are involved in the relief efforts.

The world is still wrestling with the problems caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Many are suffering, and dying. Be with those who suffer and the families of the bereaved, may they know your healing presence.

Across the world, governments face many problems. Guide those in government that they may make decisions based on the good of all and not the self interest of a few. Give people of goodwill the strength to do and say what is right, and in accordance with your will.

In then name of Jesus, your Son and our Saviour.

Amen.

Song: O worship the King,

O Worship the King (Hymn) - YouTube :

Reading: Letter to the Ephesians, chapter 2, verses 1 to 10

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[a] and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Song: God of glory, we exalt your name

God of Glory, We Exalt Your Name - YouTube

The letter to the Ephesians is a very encouraging letter. It lays out god’s glorious plan for the unification of all humanity. It shows the path from spiritual death to life in Christ.

Nowhere is there any suggestion that this is deserved by people, it is quite clear that this is as a result of God’s grace, a free and undeserved gift.

Grace.

God’s

Riches

At

Christ’s

Expense

The message is that we need the Lord. We cannot keep the law as paid down in the Old Testament. If we break one of the ten, we have broken the law, broken the set so to speak. We are not yet perfect but we trust in the perfect Lord. And we look forward to the day when we finally pass into His presence.

That is not to say that there is anything wrong with the Old Testament, after all, it leads us to Christ. But is is Christ who has delivered us from the wrath to come.

Our concern is for those who have not yet accepted the offer. Those who will face the wrath to come if they continue to refuse what is on offer. We need to share our faith with them in a non-threatening way, taking advantage of the opportunities which God presents us with.

Even those of us who are unwell, and in hospital can share our faith with the doctors, nurses, cleaners and caterers.

In verse 7, we are recognised as being in heaven, we are counted as being in heaven, but we are still “down here”. We are given a foretaste of heaven, the peace and joy of God, and the assurance of eternal life.

But, it is a gift, not a reward!

God will give us opportunities to share. Not so we can boast, but to rejoice in them. After all, none have anything to boast about, we are all sinners.

God has many works of Grace, which he wants to perform through us. Praise Him for his generosity.

Standing On The Promises of Christ My King - YouTube

Psalm 25:4 – 11

4 Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.7 Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good.

8 Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.11 For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity,

though it is great.

Prayer of confession

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear. Set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; As Noah was led to build an ark and the magi were led by the light of a star me we led by the Light of the Christ child. Father God forgive us we pray and fill us with your light and lead us and fill our hearts with heavenly joy. Amen

Song: Lead us heavenly Father lead us.

Lead us heavenly Father (hymn with lyrics) - YouTube

Genesis 9: 8 - 17 page

8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you  and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth.  I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”  And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:  I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.  Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,  I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.  Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”  So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”

A covenant means a sacred agreement or mutual promise between God and a person or a group of people.

So it is by our faith that we can stand on the promise of God

Jeremiah 31:31–34

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,

when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.34 No longer will they teach their neighbour, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Matthew 2: 1 – 12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[ from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,  are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared . 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

Song: We three kings.

We Three Kings of Orient Are - YouTube

In the bible readings this morning three things stand out; lets look first at Noah, an obedient man carries out what God asked of him. And God gave Noah a binding contract, a covenant never to flood the whole world again. yesterday we saw a double rainbow in the sky over Bolton. This is a reminder to us and to God of his Promise. Only God knows why Bolton needed a double rainbow, may be it’s all the rain they get in Lancashire.

Secondly Jeremiah. A prophet who was guided by God; he had faithfully proclaimed God's message of coming destruction to Judah for forty years. Now all his warnings and predictions were coming true. Babylon had laid siege to Jerusalem. The fall of the city was imminent. You would think after proclaiming a message that was being fulfilled before their very eyes the people would start to believe Jeremiah. But Jeremiah's message only hardened the hearts of the people. They kept taking shots at him, knocking him down, beating him, leaving him for dead. But Jeremiah kept getting back up. He prevailed despite suffering to be faithful to God's orders. Jeremiah persevered in obedience. Who allowed himself to be led

Third the Magi; We do not know how many there were. They were strangers in a foreign land they may have spoken in their native tongue and other languages possibly Greek and Roman. Remember nobles and kings would have come for advice So Herod secretly met with them, He did not want his advisers to know that he was seeking their knowledge. We do not know how many magi there were, we say three because of the gifts that had brought but the one thing that gets over looked in this narrative is they were guided by God, they were given a sign a star to follow. To day there is a lot of light pollution it is hard to see all the stars. Back them and in some very rural areas of the UK the stars and bright there are around 200 billon trillion of them but it is still possible on a very dark clear night to see around a two thousand. The Magi are to be guided by Just one special star that led to Bethlehem.

What does it take to be a guide? I was a Girl Guide. When in uniform, girls were expected to set an example for other girls who would in turn like to join, to lend a hand, to be of use in the church and community. The G.G. promise in 1969 to my duty to God in other words to be obedient to the will of God. To serve the Queen

A guideuide around a museum, National Trust property or tour guide has to have a bank of information to relay. There has to be a listener to follow the instruction when assembling flat pack furniture, there is a guide to show which bits go where. And what to do with the bit left over.

To be guided some one takes the lead

Guide dogs lead their charge safely, the person has to have great faith in the dog. Learning to ride a horse is led by another either on foot or by rider with a lead rein. A Church minister some times wears a dog collar a symbol of their obedience to being led by God.

The magi were astrologers, magicians. Kings and nobles would want to know the future. In some cultures they were thought of as priests, the Gifts they brought told of the life death end eternal life of the baby Jesus. They bowed down and worshipped him; these men who themselves were revered by others. Recognised this little child as King. God can and does move in mysterious ways.

He never does what we quite expect. When Jesus came, the Jewish people were looking for a king who would lead them and get rid of the Romans. The Jewish authorities would not recognise Jesus as the Messiah, he was not what they were looking for

Jesus was obedient to God in every aspect. God wants us to put our faith in him to follow him learn from him and to share His love with others. God promised eternal life through Jesus. Jesus asked to be remembered by sharing in holy Communion, giving us foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all people’s.

To day is our covenant service. The day we give our promise to follow Jesus, to be obedient to His call. Allowing our selves to be led. When we had a pet shop an old lady had a dog and she was complaining that it was pulling so Jonathan offered to take it for a walk; what the lady really meant was it was not willing to walk and she was having to pull it. The dog was reluctant to walk with Jonathan but it walked better when he smelt the doggie treat. Unlike the dog, God does not bribe us, he waits until we are willing to be led. The next hymn talks about deciding to follow Jesus. You may already do so, but if you are making up your mind, the last verse asks will you decide now. After our next hymn we will go in to the covenant prayer where you make your promise to God. This prayer is not said lightly. It is your promise to God.

Bind us Together (With Lyrics) - YouTube

Lord God Holy Father Since you have called us through Christ Jesus to share in this gracious covenant: we take upon ourselves with joy the yoke of obedience, and, for love of you engage ourselves to seek and do your perfect will. We are no longer our own, but yours.

I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will;

Put me to doing; put me to suffering; Let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, Exalted for you, or brought low for you; Let me be full, let me be empty; Let me have all things, let me have nothing; I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, You are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.

Matthew 26: 26 - 28.

26 While they (the disciples ) were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body.” 27 Then Jesus took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.  29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne - Christmas Hymn by Gethsemane Church Choir - YouTube

Jesus makes the point that there are good and bad shepherds. Those who look after the flock because the sheep are theirs and those who are only in it for the money. The old testament is full of references to shepherds,; in fact it is the commonest occupation referred to; notably, David, Moses, Isaac and Abel were shepherds. In a society such as that of Israel, shepherds were a necessity, supplying sheep and their products for food and religious purposes.

The prophetic use of the image of shepherds would have been well known to the people, and the image of God taking over from the leaders as their shepherd was used in Ezekiel.

When Jesus said “I am the good shepherd” he was being inflammatory, as he was claiming to be God. Jesus would have known the references from Ezekiel.

John includes this reference to good and bad shepherd to ensure that the readers know whop Jesus is. He is at great pains to point out that Jesus is “The word made flesh”.

In Ezekiel, there is the reference to “You have not”, when addressing those who claimed to be the shepherds of Israel. Ezekiel foretells that God will replace the hirelings with the Good Shepherd. In verse 17, there is a reference which is taken up later by Matthew, that of the sheep and the goats. Jesus is given the power to judge the leaders, who have fallen down in their duty.

In the modern world, we are the priestly link. The link between the sacred and the secular. We have a responsibility to be the link for both those whom we know, and those whom we do not know.

For those whom we do not know, our responsibility is to portray the approachability and the character of the church and not put obstacles in peoples’ way. For those whom we do know, we are to offer the salvation offered by Christ.

We are all called on to be active in this. It is the deepest non-physical love that we can show to someone, to lead them to better pasture.

This spirit was revealed to the shepherds in the account of Jesus’ birth in Luke’s gospel. They were the first missionaries, as they went and told others what had happened. We have no record of what happened subsequently.

Once Christmas is over, are our opportunities over?

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and the princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flocks,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among people,
To make music in the heart.
