Week beginning 24th April

Living a life aware of the character of God.

Today is traditionally called “Low Sunday”, but there is nothing Low about it. Easter is a demonstration of God’s promises.

The grave clothes were empty, the tomb was empty, and until these were discovered, the promises must have seemed empty to the disciples.

God’s promises stand.

In the Second letter to the Corinthians, chapter 1, verse 20 says , “All the promises of God find their Yes in [Christ].” In Christ Jesus you are being sanctified and made holy.

Prayers:

Lord, we exalt you, we praise you for your greatness; we are in awe of you. We give you our thanksgiving and praise.

Father we are sorry that we disobey you and fall short of your ideal for us.

Forgive us, you have shown us your way, but we have turned away.

For the sake of Jesus who died for us, forgive us.

Lord, we need your goodness and loving-kindness in this bewildering world.

We give thanks that we are redeemed by Jesus Christ.

We praise you not only with our lips but with our lives.

We pray for those areas of the world where it is difficult to be a Christian.

In particular, at this time we remember the people of the Ukraine, where there have been many lives lost as a result of the needless, horrific attack. We pray that the Christians in Ukraine will persevere in their faith, speak out and offer hope.

We pray for leaders of countries; guide them as they make decisions, that they may make decisions in accordance with your will.

We thank you for Queen Elizabeth and for her demonstration of faith, we pray that her faith may influence others.

We pray for all who gather in God’s name, everywhere. May they be sustained and comforted in their faith.

Amen.

Song:

Break Thou, the bread of life

Hymn 806 - Break Thou the Bread of Life - YouTube

Laws of Justice and Mercy.

In the book of Genesis, we have accounts of God addressing individuals; in Exodus, God is addressing his chosen people.

The way we live our lives can be very telling. People watch how we eat, live, and exercise (or not.) Our daily lives and behaviour betray something of how we think.

In Exodus, chapter 20, God gave the ten commandments; in the subsequent chapters, they are expanded in practical ways.

Standards are laid down so that people could show the world that God is unique, by the way they lived.

The message is that the Lord in the God of Justice and compassion. The instruction is to live a life that points to Him. There is a recurrent theme of the need to look after the needy.

The need to be unbiased in our dealings.

God’s compassion is shown for other humans, including enemies; and for the environment. The donkey is used as an example because it would have been a familiar sight to the hearers. There are echoes here of “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you” and “If your enemy is hungry, feed him” from the new testament.

The hearers are told to care for foreigners, and reminded that they, in their turn, were foreigners in Egypt.

The environment needs caring for as well, leave the land fallow every 7 years, so that the needy might be fed. This is not to say that the needy should only be fed every seven years! But that they should not have to wait, just go and get what they need.

The sabbath was to be a time of refreshment, for all, the servants, the animals should all be shown that compassion.

The other nations would have looked at the people of Israel and seen the compassion; they would see a land where the poor, the servants, the land and the animals were looked after. They would have seen something of the nature of God.

God wanted people to copy his characteristics, and have no other Gods before him. But the people of Israel disobeyed and worshipped others; evidence of this is found in a number of places, particularly the prophets, such as Amos and Ezekiel.

The writer wanted the reader to understand God’s justice and compassion, and the need to live a life of justice and compassion.

We are God’s people by faith in Jesus Christ, and we need to live a life of Justice and Compassion so that we can point others to God.

We need to ask whether there are ways in which we can do this better.

What does a church which practices God’s Love and compassion look like?

In the modern world many of our electronic devices need to be reset periodically. God provides us with an opportunity to do a reset on our lives.

Ask God to do a reset. Then we will know that a church that practices God’s love and compassion looks like

Song: Low in the grave he lay

Low In The Grave He Lay - with Lyrics - Salvation Army Song Book # 148 (Easter Song) - YouTube

Prayer of praise

Son of God, you love each one of us as if there were just one of us; those who have striven hard to obey your commands,
those who have drifted here, unsure of the path they trod,
those who are here simply because of your grace, individuals, all of us.

Son of God you love each one of us as if there were just one of us,

Son of God you love each one of us, dying on the cross for each of us, dying for all of us

conquering the grave for each one of us, salvation open for all of us. How can we not sing your praises for all that you have done. Hell could not hold you, you arose to give us life eternal. Hallelujah. Amen.

Poem

Deep

Jesus we saw your hands that created and healed

scared with nails deep

We saw your head and your brow scared with thorns deep

we saw your feet that walked dusty roads and climbed mountains, scared with nails deep

Jesus we see you glorified risen saving grace of your love so deep.

What a Shock. As a child I played in the church yard and cemetery tidying old forgotten graves, some going back 200 years.

Names long forgotten, but every one known to God. Some times a bit of their life was written on the headstones. Other more famous had books written about them or they left a legacy of poems. Plays, music, or their literature, But the most famous which has stood the test of all generations is Jesus. Why? because he is still living and working through the power of the holy spirit, which lives with in each one of us that is why we are His followers His disciples.

As the stone rolled away from the tomb, our sins are rolled away from us. One of the symbols of having an Easter eggs is the way eggs roll. We kept hens for a while and I would collect the eggs, making sure they lay in a basket so they could not roll, and crack or break. At Jesus’s resurrection death hasa been cracked open never again to be made whole. Satan hads lost but he is still in the world. Christians live in this world but not of of this world. Resurrection hope is for all people who believe. How can the believe if they have not heard our calling?

Prayer:

Mighty God of Resurrection and Redemption, we offer our gifts alongside our Alleluias! We offer our hands and feet and voices to take the celebration out of this place into a world that needs hope so desperately! May we go into the world with such energy, excitement, and power that the ground shakes once again, that lightning flashes, and that people see in us your redeeming love and the triumph of light over darkness! In the name of

the risen Christ, hear our prayer. Amen.

The Guards’ Report

Prayers:

Gracious Father, you sent your son to die and rise to new life in order that death might be brought to an end and that we might live a new life in Him. Yet we confess that we too often have chosen to remain captive to doubt and fear and ways that lead to death. By our thoughts, words, and actions, we have scorned your love, diminished the lives of others, and defaced your image in us. Father, forgive us for Jesus’ sake, and enable us by His resurrection power to live no longer for ourselves but for Him who died and rose again for us.

Father we Pray for all charities, for the fund raisers and volunteers. Pray for all the emergency services working over Easter, for those who are in poverty relying on food banks, for The Red Cross and all aid workers.

We pray for church outreach coordinators . We pray For our community for our friends and family for those who would like to be with us but are now unable, may they know we are holding them in our prayers, fill them with your love and peace. We ask that you peace floods the nations. Your peace fills our hearts, your peace of eternal life enriches us that we may ever live in you and you in us. Amen.

Hymn 278 I know my redeemer lives.

I Know That My Redeemer Lives StF 303 - YouTube

New life for the world. It was transfiguration Sunday a couple of weeks ago, when Jesus changed and became full of shining glory in front of a small group of disciples.

New life for the world starts today, a new beginning, this is one of the other reasons we have an EASTER egg, a symbol of new life. So today I hope each one of you will take an egg home with you. and one for someone else to share the Easter story.

When Jamie our eldest son was at infant school his teacher, gave an egg in a mug to all her class.

The following year, the new head teacher gave cream eggs to each child, her husband worked for Cadbury’s. This was a new beginning for the school for it had been taken into special measures. The school is now thriving.

Jesus prayed for His disciples and for all who believed in him. This prayer is also for us today. Theologians, those who have studied the bible in depth, believe that after the resurrection Christ stayed on earth for around 40 days teaching and healing. These prayers recorded in Johns Gospel, were said before Jesus joined his Father in heaven, they are his Prayers, said for us today because as He said “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

A Prayer of St Joseph

Lord, the resurrection of Your Son has given us new life and renewed hope.

Help us to live as new people in pursuit of the Christian ideal.

Grant us wisdom to know what we must do, the will to want to do it, the courage to undertake it, the perseverance to continue to do it, and the strength to complete it. Amen

Deep peace of the risen Lord be upon you for ever more.

Isaiah 53: 1 – 7

1Who has believed our message  and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,  nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,  a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,  he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him   and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him  the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,  and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,  so he did not open his mouth.

THE PROPHESY verse 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; In Marks Gospel Chapter 14 verse 61 his prophesy is fulfilled. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, Jesus was known as the lamb of God. God’s His only son.

And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,  so he did not open his mouth. Once a Sheep is held on it’s back it is helpless it gives in to the person with the shears. Jesus was to suffer the anguish of death.

Mark 14: 1 – 26

14 Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 2 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”

3 While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure Nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head. 4 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly. 6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” 10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them. 11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?” 20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Possibly they would have sung one of the psalms, Jesus often quoted the psalms. The 23rd psalm, one of the verses reads “although I walk in the valley of death I fear no evil for you are with me.” This would have been a comfort to Jesus. But is not recorded what the hymn was.

HYMN The Lords my Shephard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upRoR7ej9Ns

This hymn is the 23rd Psalm written by King David. And is often used in funeral services today.

Jesus was a descendent of king David.

At Christmas one of the carols often sung is “Once in royal David’s city.” The reason for His birth and His teaching came to a climax in the Easter story. That would break the heart of God.

The Lords prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to his disciples and it has been said in worship through out the world in thousands of languages, first taught by the disciples who wrote it down it links us directly to Jesus. We say this prayer at the end of our prayers.

Prayer:

At the cross I saw my reflection of my sinful ways, in the stillness of silence I confess them to you, If I have caused others pain or sorrow I am sorry, I have things I regret, there are things I can not mend, I know I was wrong but I ask that you will fill me with you peace…... At the cross I saw salvation, and your forgiveness….. At the cross I saw the beauty of your faith…...I pray that you will strengthen My faith. At the cross I saw amazing grace and love. Jesus unite Me with all who have gone before and with all my Christian brothers and sisters through out the world Those who worship in fear for those who now have no home, for those living with the fear and acts of war.

Be with those who carry pain and guilt may they know that you are a forgiving and loving Lord. Thank you that I can trust in you always. O Lord may your mercy follow me till you lead home. Amen

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Mark 14:32 - 65

32 They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34 “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

35 Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

39 Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. 40 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.

41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

43 Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.

44 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46 The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47 Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

48 “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49 Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” 50 Then everyone deserted him and fled.

51 A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him, 52 he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.

53 They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together. 54 Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

57 Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58 “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’” 59 Yet even then their testimony did not agree.

60 Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 61 But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer.

Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”

62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63 The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64 “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death. 65 Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

Voluntary;  God so loved the world By John Stainer

Mark 15: 21- 39

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.  And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.  It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the Jews.  They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,  come down from the cross and save yourself!”  In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!  Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.  At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.  And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani”   (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”  Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.  And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”

God is Love

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyYWW_P9MH4

In the original version; God is Love: and he enfoldeth all the world in one embrace; with unfailing grasp he holdeth every child of every race. And when human hearts are breaking under sorrow's iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God.

In the Mission Praise hymn book the last line has been altered to All the sorrow, all the aching wrings with pain the heart of God

All the pain and sorrow is shown by the curtain in the temple being torn into from top to bottom

The size and thickness of the curtain ensured that no one would accidentally fall into the Holy of Holies as the veil was 60 feet long, 30 feet wide, and was about one inch thick and was so massive and heavy that it took 300 priests to manipulate it. Only God could have torn this from the top. God came to earth His World would never be the same again.
