Song: Tell out my soul

Tell Out My Soul (Tune: Woodlands - 4vv) [with lyrics for congregations] - YouTube

Prayer:

Father, my heart is filled with gratitude for the abundant blessings you have bestowed upon me. I thank you for the changing seasons, the falling leaves, and the opportunity to gather with loved ones in celebration.

Lord, I ask for the grace to maintain a thankful heart not only during this month but every day of my life. May I cultivate an attitude of gratitude that extends beyond the holiday season, recognizing your daily provision and love.

Help me remember to be thankful for the simple joys of life, for the warmth of my home, for the nourishment on my table, and for the company of family and friends. In the busyness of my daily routine, may I never take these blessings for granted.

I am thankful for the challenges and trials that have shaped me, for they have allowed me to grow and develop resilience. May I see your hand in every situation, understanding that even difficulties serve a purpose in my life.

I am grateful for the gift of faith, for the hope that sustains me, and for your abiding presence. As I journey through November and beyond, may my heart overflow with thankfulness for your unwavering love and grace. Amen.

Song: Ye servants of God

Ye Servants Of God - YouTube

God’s people are named in 5 different ways; believers, brothers, disciples, Christians and saints.

We are told that all born again believers belong to the same church, and that we should be open hearted to others and have a heart wherever you go.

    It is worth looking at these 5 names separately, and what we can take them to mean. Firstly, believers;

Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.” (Acts 5 v14 )

When someone is called a believer it describes their convictions. Everyone who believes will be saved by Jesus. The Holy Spirit lives in us and we belong to the Lord. You know other believers by how they speak with us and how they behave.

Believe your beliefs and doubt your doubts; do not make the mistake of doubting your beliefs and believing your doubts.” Charles F. Deems.

    Secondly, Brothers

Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them” (Acts 6 v3)

Brothers – or brethren – means their company, family, band. They had all things in common and as they became believers they shared with others who had less. In the bible they met regularly, went to houses to break bread and gather together. They enjoyed life and each other’s company.

The Lord wants us to harmonise and develop relationships with each other and with him. We can encourage and help each other, have fellowship and love each other.

    Thirdly, Disciples

Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples.” (Acts 9 v1-2)

A disciple is called to follow Jesus in the face of persecution, to learn from and copy his master Jesus and to serve. Jesus came to serve and to die.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2 v5)

We need to be humble and show our concerns for others.

Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9 v62)

If we love Jesus we will press on. It costs to follow Jesus, you will face difficult opposition. However it will cost more not to follow him.

    Fourthly, Christians;

Christians can be recognised in their conduct. If people criticise, don’t retaliate, just let it go. Always identify with the Lord and be proud to be a Christian. When opportunity comes, talk about Jesus and be known as a Christian by our behaviour and concern for others.

    Fifthly, Saints;

The term “saint” is used in the bible to refer to believers. More recent use is to refer to someone who has made a significant contribution, or sacrifice. The term is usually used after someone’s death.

There is nothing in the bible to suggest that after someone has died their Christian status can be changed or elevated. We are being made holy by the Lord whilst living, by work of the Holy Spirit.

“ But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.” (Galatians 5 v22)

We need to aim to have the same character as Jesus, it is a process which is ongoing throughout our life.

Psalm 85.

    Using beautiful imagery, the psalmist tells us that there is a relationship between righteousness and peace-they kiss each other.

    It’s symbolic of a true connection. If we want to know lasting peace, we need to be concerned about our required standard. The two are inseparable.

    Righteousness means

    Goodness, virtue, uprightness, decency, integrity, worthiness, morality, honesty, honour,

    blamelessness, guiltlessness, sinlessness, saintliness, purity, noble-mindedness;

but sin brings us short of the standard. God knows this. So he sent His only son into the world. Jesus the prince of peace who died that we may be saved.

That through him righteousness and peace are one.

James 3:17-18

O God our help in ages past

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjdmLstpNGE

At 11.00am - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - the First World War came to an end. Much of the war had been fought in dug-out trenches across Belgium and France. It is thought that about 9 million soldiers lost their lives, and about 27 million were wounded - many of them permanently disabled. At 11.00am, the fighting stopped everywhere, six hours after the Armistice was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne, northern France. Two years later the body of an unknown British soldier from one of the battlefields was laid in a coffin and brought over to England. On this day in 1920 the coffin of the unknown soldier was taken in procession to Westminster Abbey, past thousands of people lining the streets. During the service, the coffin was laid to rest with some soil from France in the floor of the central aisle of Westminster Abbey. The tomb commemorates all British casualties, especially those who have no known grave, and all who suffered during that war and since. Lying there amongst the tombs of kings and queens and many famous people, this “Tomb of the Unknown Warrior” bears the inscription, “Beneath this stone rests the body of a British warrior, unknown by name or rank, brought from France to be among the most illustrious of the land.” During the First World War, the soldiers in their dug-outs could see red poppies growing in the fields of Flanders, the name for an area that covers parts of Belgium, the Netherlands and France. Each year, the Royal British Legion sells artificial red poppies to raise money for British injured soldiers, sailors and aircrew who have served their country up to the present day.

Last Sunday, acts of remembrance took place to recall those who had given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.

Please pause for two minutes, and hold in your prayers, those who have laid the lives down fighting for peace.

Poem by Henry William Baker 1821 – 77

O God of love, O King of peace, Make wars throughout the world to cease;
Our greed and violent ways restrain.
Give peace, O God, give peace again. Remember, Lord, your works of old,
The wonders that your people told;
Remember not our sins' deep stain. Give peace, O God, give peace again.

Whom shall we trust but you, O Lord? Where rest but on your faithful word?
None ever called on you in vain. Give peace, O God, give peace again. Where saints and angels dwell above All hearts are joined in holy love;
Oh, bind us in that heavenly chain. Give peace, O God, give peace again.

Prayer:

Beauty for brokenness, Hope for despair Lord, in the suffering, This is our prayer, Bread for the children, Justice, joy, peace Sunrise to sunset Your kingdom increase! God of the poor, Friend of the weak, Give us compassion we pray, Melt our cold hearts, Let tears fall like rain, Come, change our love From a spark to a flame. Shelter for fragile lives, Cures for their ills, Work for the craftsman, Trade for their skills, Land for the dispossessed, Rights for the weak,Voices to plead the cause Of those who can't speak. Refuge from cruel wars, Havens from fear, Cities for sanctuary, Freedoms to share. Peace to the killing-fields, Scorched earth to green, Christ for the bitterness, His cross for the pain. We bring before you the war torn countries, where men women and children have been hurt or killed, where families have had to flee from their homes. Christ as a child with his parents fled into Egypt a refuge. We pray for All refuges in the world,
Lord we know there is sorrow, bloodshed, hatred and mistrust. Father we ask for your healing, and love. Father we ask that your son Jesus our Lord, the prince of peace, will bring change in to the minds of those who lead their countries; that they may remember the love He showed on the cross. That love which can warm the coldest of hearts. That they may find a workable ceasefire which can lead to a foundation of respect and peace. We thank you for the love you have for us Lord God for your world the beauty you created open our eyes that we may see the harm we have caused, bring Rest for the ravaged earth, Oceans and streams, we have Plundered and poisoned, Our future, our dreams Lord, end our madness Carelessness, greed. Make us content with The things that we need God of the poor, Friend of the weak, Give us compassion we pray, Melt our cold hearts, Let tears fall like rain, Come, change our love From a spark to a flame

Lighten our darkness, Breathe on this flame Until your justice Burns brightly again.
Until the nations Learn of your ways, Seek your salvation And bring you their praise.

Father God, be with all peacemakers. World leaders and leaders of governments that they may work together for the good of all people. We ask this prayer in your name of Jesus. Amen

James 3: 1 – 18

We can build or destroy.

When you remember hurt things that have been said and keep thinking about them the wound is unable to heel it eats into you, you may end up carrying a chip on your shoulder and become bitter with your thoughts and words. Men and women who have been P. O. W. or hostages carry scars both mentally and physically. My Grandfather was a prisoner of war in 1916. But he never held a grudge he said “they were only obeying orders just as he was” he suffered with shell shock for the rest of his life but because he forgave them God took away his hurt and replaced it with compassion. He was a gentle person and loving man for all his life. He would show the love of God in his action to everyone he met.

There are Men and women who live to tell the story of conflicts, battles, and sieges.

And some still living through the pain of war. All countries who hold remembrance days hopefully will learn from history and to work for peace. We are are and should be ambassadors for peace. So let us keep guards on our tongues and speak of God’s love, Remembering not gossip but find goodness. Do not be tempted to listen to gossip but find the truth, speak with kindness. Do not curse the name of God with your tongue but praise him. Gossip is a sin. So Let our tongues speak of peace, And let our actions show love and compassion. This coming advent let the light of Christ shine bright in this dark world.

May your love of Him shine out always. Leviticus says in 19:18 “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbour as yourself. I am the LORD.” Matthew records Jesus saying in 5:44 “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. John also writes the words of Christ in 15:12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you”.

Always remember the love Jesus has for you in your heart. He came that we may all have life eternal.

A short story by By:  Randy Kilgore

When a US Navy vessel arrives or departs from the military bases in Pearl Harbour, the crew of that ship lines up in dress uniform. They stand at attention at arm’s length on the outer edges of the deck, in salute to the soldiers, sailors, and civilians who died on December 7, 1941. It is a stirring sight, and participants often list it among the most memorable moments of their military career. Even for spectators on shore, the salute triggers an incredible emotional connection, but especially between the servants of today and the servants of yesterday. It grants nobility to the work of today’s sailor, while giving dignity to the sacrifice of those from the past. It was surely with an eye toward creating this same kind of emotional bond. Our participation in the Lord’s Table honours Christ’s sacrifice while also granting us a connection to Him unlike any other act of remembrance.

Just as the US Navy carefully prescribes the way it salutes the fallen, so too Scripture teaches us how to remember Jesus’ sacrifice in 1 Cor. 11: 23 – 25 it says . For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Prayer of confession .

Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name and what our hearts can no longer bear. Set us free from a past that we cannot change, and open to us a future in which we can be changed. Grant us grace to grow more and more in Your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord, the Light and hope of the world.

Prayer of Remembrance.

Christ, have mercy on those who cry; Christ have mercy on us when we turn away from the cries of others. Give us the strength of compassion, that we may never shield our eyes and hearts from pain, but seek to heal and bless. Bless us with courage and arm us with hope, that we may lessen the suffering of our world.

Lord abide with those who find this day painful be close to them and as the day draws to a close may they know that you are ever with them and us. . Amen

Abide with me.

Help me keep you first in my life.

    Prayer : Lord God Help me speak only good things in your name. Help me worship you each week. Help me find away to honour my parents. Help me protect life. And to be faithful to those I love.  I know I am not very generous.  help me to want to share and care Help me speak the truth. Guide me through all aspects of my life Help me read your word of old but they are still written for today may they speak with in my heart and help me to understand that I may grow in my faith that your will may be done. Amen.

While the people were following Moses in the great exodus. God fed the people with manna (bread) they were led with a pillar of fire they saw God in action, they had to learn to trust in God this took 40 years. The people knew that Moses had spoken with the almighty living God. They were afraid as the almighty was so awesome. Moses told them that God had given him the Laws that they have to obey.

Exodus 20 1- 23

We shall look at the commandments one at a time

1. I am the Lord your God, You shall have no other gods before  me.

This one sounds easy or is it. Do we put worldly needs first? do we think “it does not matter if we do not worship Him to day because I am too busy with this or that.” God would like to be come the most important aspect of your life.

2. Do not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven or on earth or worship it

God is not an object made from wood, stone, precious, gems, or any thing else. God is the only living God for us to trust to worship and praise. Do not make Him jealous He loves you unconditionally and worthy of all praise and glory

Moses I know you’re the man

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr7YZ203UVI

3."You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain..."

Some times it is say to “for God’s sake” this is what it means to take God’s name in vain

Another example a young lad was out on a camping trip he hit his head on a swinging camping lamp and let out a curse using God’s name. The camp leader said God has come in many ways but as far as is known He has never been a lamp. The boy was sorry and learned what blaspheme meant.

4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."

Give God one day at the start of the week when we can dedicate our selves to Him and worship Him and be still in His presence

Be still and know that I am God

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyDr9-Mpc_s

5.Honour your father and your mother.

let your actions work for good.

    6.Do not murder.

    Do not kill, Work for peace, Some people feel safe carrying a knife or Gun or any other weapon. Instead ask God to be with you. You may save someone's life this very hour or day

    Pray for those who kill, and pray for those affected by the death.

God With Me

    7. Do not commit adultery. (Having an affair while in a marriage or long term commitment)

This act brings pain, loss, breaks families, loving. Trust will be gone.

    8. Do not steal.

    Do not take what does not belong to you. It does not matter what it is. The owner suffers emotionally.

    9. Do not bear false witness against your neighbour.

    Let your yes be yes and your no be no speak only the truth in every circumstance .

  1. 10. Do not covet

    (yearn to possess something, especially something belonging to another) Your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your wife, neighbour's nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's.”

    In the modern world do not go after your neighbour's wife /husband house car, caravan or anything else they have.

    Your Neighbour is explained in Luke 10: 25-37.

Song: For the fruits of His creation

For the fruits of his creation (with lyrics for congregations/StF 124) - YouTube

Our readings show us an interesting side of Jesus, his knowledge of the scriptures, (what we call the old testament); and his knowledge of people, their questions and what they were really meaning.

Our reading from Leviticus is a part of a long series of commandments given to the people of Israel. Some parts are difficult to translate, others seem to be peculiar to our modern minds.

Commands to be holy, to set time aside for God are easy to come to terms with. The command to honour your mother and father (interesting that mother is first) make good sense in any era.

Verse 18 presents difficulties. What does “Love your neighbour as yourself” mean? Does it only mean those like you? Does it only refer to the person next door? Does it only refer to Israelite men? The instruction in verses 33 and 34 to love the foreigner (alien in older versions) make the instruction more inclusive, but was controversial amongst some.

Jesus was questioned about many things by the Pharisees and Sadducees. This time he was asked which is the most important commandment. He answers by quoting not 1, but 2!

Had Jesus received training as a Rabbi? He certainly seems well versed in answering difficult questions. He also seems to put great importance on this quote. He quotes the injunction to “Love your neighbour” in two other places, (Matthew chapter 5 verse 43, and chapter 19 verse 18).

The story is also told by Mark and Luke, asking the question “Who is my neighbour?”

The question “Who is my neighbour?” is relevant to modern life. Does it just mean people like us? People with whom we work?; who live in the same block of flats, or area?; people who are travelling together?; people who go to church together?; football fans?;

Matthew’s account of the story of the sheep and goats in chapter 25 settles this question. Even those who are amongst “The least of these” are our neighbours.

Prayer:

God of abundant and gracious love, we remember the vulnerable of this world;

Those who live in the shadow of war;

People of Israel and Palestine;

People of Ukraine and Russia;

People of Ethiopia;

People of Sudan.

We remember those of many countries who face problems;

Debt, poverty, climate change, violence.

Those of our own society who lack homes, who are bereaved, who are discriminated against.

Guide these people to sources of help, and if we can be that source of help, may we be willing and able to help.

Surround all with compassion, and healing. Help us to be compassionate and loving.

Guide us in your service.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour,

Amen

Reading: Matthew’s gospel, chapter 22, verses 1 to 14

Song: Meekness and Majesty.

There is a stage production called “Peter Pan Goes Wrong”, which purports to show a production of Peter Pan by an amateur cast. The “production” is ruined by the amateurishness of the cast and their rivalries and jealousies. The result is hilarious.

Here we have the story of a wedding that goes wrong, but the results are anything but hilarious. It is a catalogue of extreme behaviour.

The King’s son is to be married. A time of great celebration, and the invitations are sent out. To the horror of all concerned, the invitations are refused. The guests would rather stay at home!

Does anyone refuse a royal invitation? Would you refuse an invitation to a royal party?

The King’s response is to push the boat out. The best chefs and entertainers are engaged, but the invitees are still unimpressed. The servant-messengers are seized, abused and even murdered. The King is at war - with his own people.

But the dinner is still on. He invites the common people, those who would ordinarily not get in to such a prestigious event.

At this point it is worth reminding ourselves that this is a parable, a story told to make a point. It is not an historical account of a real event.

Everyone comes in. They enjoy the feast. The party is going with a swing. Then, someone is discovered who is not properly dressed. Who would go to a wedding without making a special effort with their dress? Would you go as you were if you received such an invite?

How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?” was the question asked. No satisfactory was received, and the man was not just asked to leave, he was thrown into outer darkness! He was effectively made a refugee, stateless and without status.

Matthew is recording Jesus’ warning against complacency and self-satisfaction. We are the beneficiaries of God’s most generous invitation, and must behave accordingly. The invitation is issued to all, good and bad, but there are standards. The clothes (or lack of same) is a metaphor for these standards. Standards in which we must be dressed in life.

The positive behaviour of people who have accepted God’s invitation is what is referred to. The King of heaven has invited us to his banquet, we need to put on our “party clothes”. We need to try to meet his standards, not just say yes and carry on as we are.
