About our next hymn

According to the editor of The Oxford Edition of the Works of John Wesley, “And Can It Be” was written immediately following Charles Wesley’s conversion to Christianity on May 21, 1738. Wesley had known his Bible well before this time but had not yet experienced affirmation of new birth or the wholeness of grace in his life.

Wesley starts the first stanza (verse) by expressing admiration over the love shown by Jesus dying for him and wonders how we who "pursued" his death are now graced by it.

In the second stanza,(verse) Wesley calls for appreciation of God's love and mercy in this sacrifice.  In the third stanza, (verse)Wesley conveys the unending grace and mercy of Christ’s love and humility in the incarnation, death, and finding of lost sinners.  In the fourth stanza,(verse) Wesley harkens to the "imprisonment" of his own sin and the freedom he found in Christ. Finally, he reviews the results of Christ’s loving and merciful work: there is no condemnation for those made alive in Christ and clothed in his righteousness; rather, there is open access to the throne as we have the right to claim the divine crown.

This next Bible reading inspired Charles Wesley to write our closing hymn

1 Corinthians 3: 7- 17

When Moses talked with God he shone with God’s Glory, when he went back to the people. It was so bright that he put on a veil to stop the people from running away and to stay and hear the ten commandments, the law or rules that they must live by.

In Christ we have a new covenant a new promise, new rule John 13: 34-35

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Jesus’s love is all divine all excelling.

Christ was sent by God from heavenly joy and glory, to earth He Came to save to show his earthy glory at His resurrection.

He change from glory into glory that through him we have eternal life

 Rogation Sunday 2023

Rogation Sunday

Rogation is an ancient Church festival to seek blessing for a community and its sustenance. The word rogation comes from the Latin verb rogare, meaning "to ask", which reflects the beseeching of God for protection from calamities. As the Book of Common Prayer puts it: “Rogation Days are the three days preceding Ascension Day, especially devoted to asking for God’s blessing on agriculture and industry.” Since mediaeval times there has been a tradition of “beating the bounds” of the parish, praying for God’s blessing upon the crops and thus the well-being of that particular settlement. It is still observed by some parishes today – with a procession, prayers and a sharing of hope in God’s goodness to nourish every endeavour which enables people to flourish.

Rogation invites people to ask for blessing – for a particular place; for all its inhabitants; for every endeavour to promote the common good. It is totally inclusive – joining everyone in seeking sustenance and a commitment to play their part in its provision.

Genesis, chapter 1: verses 1 to 31

Prayer

We come before you our God and Sustainer, remembering that you are our Creator and the source of all being. Out of your love the universe was born. From the beginning of time you put in place all that is needed for growth and saw that it was good. You have put this world into our hands: may we recognise your Spirit within it, disturbing and challenging us to care for creation, challenging us to care for the weak and the deprived. Lord we remember that we are called by you to nourish the earth and its diversity of life, to share the gifts you have given, with one another and with the poor of the world. Amen.

Lord God we ask that you have mercy on our tired land, and to prosper the work of our soiled hands. Lord God we ask that you have mercy to forgive our delusion of self-sufficiency so that we may praise you for your provision and goodness. Lord, you give us this good earth, yet we take your generous gifts for granted.

Lord, you give us this good earth, but we squander its rich resources.

Lord, you give us this good earth, but we fail to share your bounty with all of your children.

May the God of love and power free us from your sins, heal and strengthen us by His Spirit, and raise us to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 107: verses 1 to 38

The king of love my shepherd is,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWfZ-8s71-k

There are lots forms of Water streams , rivers seas, lakes, garden ponds or even a fire hydrant,

pause and reflect on the gift of water. Its pure water refreshing taste. Farmers need it for watering livestock and crops.

Water aid is reaching the far flung counties of the world making water safe to drink and accessible in building wells. Water is very welcome in the desert .An oasis for humans and beats

We are not to take it for granted.

Jesus said that he gives living water. The woman at the well story asked Jesus for the living water so she had not to collect water in the heat of the day for she was an out cast and seen as a sinner in her village Jesus gave her more than she could hope for or understand. The living waters flow with in us.

John 7: 37-38

37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

As the scripture has said, “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.”’

Zechariah 14:8-9
And in that day living waters will flow out of Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer as well as in winter. And the Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name the only one.

Prayer

Almighty God,

we thank you for the gift of water to sustain, refresh and cleanse all life. May we who have an abundance of water see it as a precious and scarce resource. Help us to be mindful how much is consumed so that we can live in the way that we do: guide us to use it sparingly, and keep us mindful of those who suffer through drought, pollution and flood. We ask this for the sake of him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As a family we would go round the hedge rows picking blackberries A lad saw us and asked what we were doing. His response was the poor ought to do this. We said that is why we were doing it, nothing nicer than a blackberry pie

Some of you may grow fruit or veg in your garden ready for picking once ripe.

Farmers are growing foods ready to be harvested at their correct time.

May we never take the farmers for granted

For the fruits of all creation

Mark’s gospel, chapter 4: verses 26 to 29

26 He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

Prayer

Almighty God, whose will it is that the earth and sea should bear fruit in due season, bless the labours of all those who work on land and sea. Grant them a good harvest and the grace always to rejoice in your care. Lord you have ordered our life that we are dependent on one another,

We ask that you will prosper those engaged in commerce. and industry.

All workers direct their minds and hands in their service for us. We ask that you O God will be with all with who live and work locally. Grant O Lord that whatever gifts they have, they may be used to the full, for the enrichment of all our lives We ask this prayer in the name of Jesus, the good shepherd. Amen.

As a young Girl I use to horse ride in the summer. When the days were too hot we would ride in the valley where there was a lovely stream and we would get the horses and ponies to walk through it we could look up to the hills the views were lovely . The buzzards would fly over head.

Psalm 50: verses 1 to 2, 10 to 11

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,  speaks and summons the earth  from the rising of the sun to where it sets.

for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.

While riding we would see tall garden canes in the field with the ends painted red, it was not until the harvest at chapel when we learned from a farmer preacher that he would mark his field with canes so he knew where the nests were and would not harvest until the young lapwing or pee wit had fledged. He told the young Sunday school children that they were to take care of all God’s wildlife.

All creatures of our God and king

Prayer

Creator God, Jesus teaches us through the beauty and abundance of creation to put our trust in you for all things. We ask you now to bless our fields and gardens our hills and streams our rivers, lakes, reservoirs and seas that in all these things we might glimpse a reflection of your glory and your gracious love for each one of us. Bless, O Lord, the houses and farms and all the homes around this place. Give us good health, purity of spirit, strength and humility, hospitality, a spirit of forgiveness and firm knowledge of our need to seek you in all things. We pray in the name of Jesus, creative Word of God. Amen.

What good work are doing with God?

What would you ask God for ?

What is God asking of you ?

John’s gospel chapter 15:verses 1 to 9

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes  so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.

Prayer

God our father, we give thanks for the gift of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who was content to share the life of his village in Nazareth. We give you thanks for all who live and work on farms, and for all who walk and ride around the green valleys. We give you thanks for those who work in and live in this area . May your blessing rest upon them.

We pray in the name of Jesus our Lord . Amen.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

2 Corinthians, chapter 12, verse 9

Prayer:

Lord, we are often aware of what we lack, but we know that you are with us. We give thanks for friends, brains, imagination, the fruitful earth and time to enjoy them. We know that you hold us in the palm of your hand, and are thankful.

Lord, we acknowledge you as King of Kings. We pray for our new king, Charles III. Give him wisdom to rule for the benefit of the people.

We pray for all leaders, the government and councillors. We pray that they will be aware of their responsibilities, and use the resources available to them for the good of all.

Song: Jesus is King,

Jesus is King and I Will Extol Him (Singing the Faith 327 / StF 327) - YouTube

Reading: John’s gospel, chapter 6, verses 1 to 15

Prayer; this is a difficult subject for many people. It is a means of deepen our relationship with God. It is often associated with a feeling of guilt. It is a bit like healthy living, we know we should do it, but we feel that everyone else does it better than we do!

At the end of our reading, we hear of Jesus withdrawing from the crowd. We are left to wonder whether he was tempted to let the people make him King. Does this compare with the temptations he experienced at the start of his ministry, and are recorded elsewhere.? But, he goes up by himself, away from his disciples, to work things out.

What is prayer, what is it for? It is a way of finding out about ourselves. It is not a shopping list!

Just as the crowd wanted to make Jesus something, we need to reflect on what people want us to be.

The world wants us to be a consumer. When we watch the commercials, ask “Can a shampoo really achieve so much?”

God knows us. He has no agenda beyond love. He is the one who0 helps us to “find ourselves”.

How do we pray?

Begin with praise and thanksgiving. This enables us to remember who God is. Then, we can go to our requests.

We can’t always build trips up into the hills into our routine. Where can we put time aside? When I was at work, I could set time aside to pray on the bus whilst travelling home.

If you don’t have a routine, start one today.

Susanna Wesley, mother of John, had 10 children. She taught them all to read (unusual for the girls on that era) and only then did she teach them to sew. When she needed her quiet time, she would lift her apron over her head. This was her tabernacle, and the children knew not to disturb her.

In the recent coronation, at the time of the anointing, screens were erected as a symbol of withdrawal. This was the king’s time of private prayer.

We can pray any where, because God is everywhere. We are the ones who need to make the time.

Prayer written by Richard Herman

God our Father,  Lord our Shepherd,

Spirit of the Living God,  One in Three … and Three in One:

We praise You our Creator, Saviour, and Provider.

By Your grace, we lack nothing.  You feed us in body and in soul.

You give us rest when we are weary.  You direct us on ways that are good and right.

You go with us through the dark times  so we will not walk them alone.

You protect us in Your goodness   with Your strength.

You spread before us   a banquet in the wilderness  and a feast in the face of whoever

and whatever threatens us. You pour over us Your oils   of cleansing grace, of healing, and of gladness.  And no matter where we have wandered,  You open wide Your arms to welcome us home.  That is why we praise You;  That is why we love You;

That is why we are here to worship You today,

our God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit,  the One in Three and the Three in One.  AMEN.

Hymn: The King of love my Shephard is,

King David, Shepherd Boy

The second King of Israel was David, the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem. Jesse had eight sons. Seven of them were brought to Samuel to anoint as King of Israel, but none of them was the son God had chosen. Samuel asked Jesse if he had any other children. Jesse had one more son, the youngest who cared for the sheep. When Samuel saw David coming across the field, God revealed to him that David was indeed the one God has chosen. Samuel immediately anointed David to be the next King of Israel.

Why would God choose a shepherd boy, a young man with little experience in the political arena-not old enough to have much experience in the adult world? David had never been in a battle with another country. Instead, he was a hard worker and had a heart for God. Whatever his hands found to do, he did unto the Lord.

We might ask what qualities would a shepherd have that would cause God to believe David this shepherd boy would make a good King? Let’s look at the responsibilities of a good shepherd.

Sheep are pretty helpless animals. Goats have a good since of direction. Should they wander off, they can find food and shelter, but sheep cannot. They wander off and can’t find their way home. The shepherd has to lead them to food and water everyday even to a place to rest.

A shepherd must continually be aware of his sheep and their needs because they have no sense of danger or what their needs are. Even when eating his lunch, the shepherd keeps his eyes on the sheep, making sure his sling is nearby. He protects them from wandering away or the attack of animals. He even builds a shelter when needed for the sheep to sleep in with only one way in and one way out. The shepherd is the gate.

A good shepherd has expertise with a sling. He spends many hours practising to become excellent at hitting his targets, whether it is an animal or just to scare a sheep wandering off. I am sure David must have sat and watched the sheep thinking how much people are like sheep needing a shepherd.

Our God knows people are like sheep — they need someone to lead them to food, water, and show them where to go. People need daily guidance they are easily persuaded to make poor choices.

God chose this young man who loved God and was obedient to God’s Word. He loved the sheep; he was kind, gentle, and caring, many times he risk his own life to save his sheep. He named each one and each evening checked each one for any abrasions that needed oil for healing. The sheep knew his voice and stayed close to him because they knew he loved and cared for them. David was a very talented young man who could play the harp and was an excellent marksman. He was a poet and had a very kind heart. He loved to sing praises to God as he cared for his sheep.

David Played the harp and wrote some of our psalms we will now sing one of the most famous the 23rd psalm

Reading: Luke’s gospel, chapter 15: verses 1 to 7

The other day I lost the car keys I looked where I thought they we so I looked in the shopping bag, then in my hand bag. I looked where they should have been put.

I went to see the car was still parked up, It was. I was about to give up looking then I put my loss to the Lord but there was still no response. Then a family member came in and I told them of my loss. He too started to look then he looked at me sheepishly then went to his coat and pulled out my keys with an apology, he said he went to the car last night to fetch something had left in the car. I was so happy that all was forgiven.

I must admit I am not good at finding my way when travelling the satnav is a help. I try to map read. But I have help from my husband he navigates and I trust him. I have taken many a wrong turn in my life but Jesus has guided me to where I should be. All we need to is ask for help. He will show you just follow his instructions listening to his voice. Just like the sheep who listen to their shepherd.

Bible reading John’s gospel, chapter 10: verses 1 to 28

Hymn: I will sing the wondrous

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDPCFbAysBc

Sermon on the second verse of the last hymn

I was lost, but Jesus found me, How and where do we get lost? The sat nav, atlas, street plan, or A-Z can be confusing. Also by taking a wrong path, or falling in with people who seem to know their way, but you end up in trouble.
Found the sheep that went astray, How do we go astray there are temptations of life Gambling, money, drugs, alcohol. Maybe it is a wild life style.
Raised me up and gently led me If an animal/person is hurt you handle them with care. You show by your own example of care, and take tentative steps. A mother elephant, a huge great beast, helps her baby take its steps with her trunk and will guide it nurturing it.

God as great as he is, As powerful and almighty will tenderly lead you.
Back into the narrow way. Back on the right trail .

Days of darkness still may meet you but you have a friend who will go through them with you

sorrows path you oft may tread; being a Christian doese not mean that we are exempt from pain, it gives us empathy, sympathy, compassion. We feel life's sorrows. Jesus did; he cried at the grave of Lazarus. He was moved when he saw his sister’s grief, he understands our sorrows

but his presence still is with you We have to listen and respond to His voice.

Where ever Jesus leads us we will like his sheep follow on,

So we give thanks to God for What a wonderful Good Shephard Jesus our Lord and saviour
